might sound thick, but unsure where fourwheel drive stick should be.
have light on orange indicating 4 wheels, on dashboard
am i in our out ?
and wher should the stick be to be out?
thanks

What is it? If it's a defenderor a disco or a rangie, it's ALWAYS in 4wd.

The orange light on the dash is probably your diff lock which should always be off unless you are in a position to lose traction, otherwise you will bugger up your transmission. Move the short lever right!

He means move/pull it to the right or you'll have yr nob in yr hand :D

If it still doesn't turn the orange Diff Lock light off you may need to reverse a few feet.

The light stay's on because transmission wind up keeps the Diff Locked. Which will happen on hard surfaces if driven in Diff Lock, can also happen on grass and in mud, etc which is why you only use Diff Lock where and when traction is expected to be lost and turned off as soon as possible.
On slippery surfaces it may unwind itself when driving forwards, so if you've moved the stick to the right and the light stay's on just ensure it turns off within say 5 seconds.
That's what make's Landrovers so good off road you can turn Diff Lock off and on without losing momentum. ;)
Moving your short gear stick backwards and forwards tho is best done at a standstill.
It is possible to move from Low to High whilst moving but involves allowing the revs to drop right off and in most events not neccesary unless trying to do a hill start whilst towing a very heavy load. i.e 3 tonne not yr caravan ;)
and lastly what ever you do don't move the stick from High to Low without being at a complete standstill. Simples :D

first of all let me thank everyone who as taking time to reply.
have moved, pulled to left, into right bottom H and reversed, still have orange light on.
when i put it right N landrover will not move but light still on.
is diff still on ?
once again a big thanks

Hopefully yr on a flat surface.

Chock "either front or back" wheels in front and behind said wheels. Take yr handbrake off then using a trolley jack slowly lift the opposite end up slowly.

Very Slowly one or both of them will spin out the transmission wind up so make sure your chocks are firmly wedged in. and nobody is in front or behind the vehicle ;) :)

Good Luck

You have the opposite problem to me - on my defender, the diff lock light don't come on at all, but as far as I can tell the diff is locking ok, so I suspect a duff switch. I will fit a look into it further / fit a new switch in the better weather.
