unknowen engine

hello iv just got a defender I when to order a service kit and found something odd the engine looks like a td but the engine code is 23j what engine have I got iv had a good look online and it don't match lr numbers and that's all I know apart from its red the usual stuff really and the timing cover is ally and got british layland stamped on it any idea on what engine this could be thanks

Try googling pictures of different Land Rover Engines and see what parts match with yours. Is it dies el? Has it got a turbo? Is it an original rngine, to that vehicle or a conversion? What age is your Land Rover? Any other unique features? As jamesmartin says, pics would help

Yes I have it saved now....still don't really know what a 'city engine' is though?

I would assume its from an FX4, got an old taxi engine in the shed will have to look tomorrow and see what the code is on it.

I thought Sherpas had 14J versions and taxis had 15H ones

You mention it "looks like a Diesel" are you 100% sure it's a diesel?

The BMC E series engine numbers started 23j IIRC

the biggest being a 6pot 2.6 unit..

thanks for the replies and trying to help im sure its diesel as its got series looking injectors and had it running on diesel .im not sure if its out of a ldv etc guy I got it from didn't say and I just assumed it was a standard td by the look of it .
