*** UPDATE***

Call from the garage saying that they think it is the UJ's so well done to those who guessed that!!

Going to get a new prop and fit it. Hope here is that the rattling is down to the prop and simply not a symptom.

Hope is also that it hasn't done any damage / gearbox won't have been compromised and now need a refurb.

Haven't got the quote for the new prop yet but with fitting it's thought to be around £500 when speaking to the chap on the phone. Service is going to be about £269.

Also just got one of those Moto Lita Steering wheels in black - 15" that they're going to fit while they're at it.

:(

I'll just wait for the quote and take it from there...

The genuine land rover ones are about £450 - Could be where it's being sourced from...

anyone that would buy from a dealer has more money than sense google frc8368g for front and frc8393g for the rear, both are genuine parts ,if you remove g from the end of each number you get other choices

Not going to be from dealer.

After market 'good quality' Front Prop Shaft. Supplied and fitted is £375 including VAT.

They are pleasant people and I can't do the fix myself.

People can say you're paying too much but with a gun to my head I don't have any choice.

It is what it is.

Yeah. Had a look. Ok. So they're that price.

I can't call the garage and accuse them that it's overpriced.

I appreciate it James.

I just need the car to be up and running and getting into a heated discussion with a service garage over a prop part cost will be detrimental to the end goal of the car being back and fixed.

Is there any scope for you to personally acquire and then to supply the garage with the necessary parts yourself and then just pay for them to fit them? At least then you avoid being raped for an absurd mark up on parts.

I've done this before.

Hope you're back on the road soon old chap.

I'm waiting for something important to fall off mine - it's just a question of time. :D

To be honest I just want it sorted. Long term I will look to save lots by doing stuff myself so this time I will put the cost down to a one-off. Off set against how much the repair would have cost at LR or that it could have been a lot worse I have come out relatively unscathed.

Prop shaft UJ or A frame ball joint will clunk when taking up load from neutral into drive. i.e. pulling away or gear changes.
As for the whine in 5th ????????????

They're looking at it now.

Year. Re-the whine. Don't know. Think it may have just been a symptom.

Chatted to my local garage the other day about parts. He said he can't wait around for days for parts to be delivered as most of his customers wouldn't like that. He has an account with the local landrover dealer and that they'll deliver stuff within hours or next day. They have the genuine stuff or a cheaper line for most parts and he barely makes anything on the parts alone.

Just saying.
