Tyre sizes on a Discovery 2

Hi

Can anyone tell me if 275x45r20 general grabber tyres are ok if fitted to a 2002 Discovery 2, I have recently bought the car with these tyres fitted to Land rover alloy rims, however a couple of times when i have had to make a really sharp turn at slow speed, the car has felt like the body or axle has lifted and dropped back to the ground, totally unexpected and quite alarming when it happens, but then everything feels ok. I am really concerned in case it happens at speed.

Any help or advice welcome.

Thanks for that, but are you saying this combination is unsafe? I'm not sure about such technical matters, i've just assumed it was the wheel/tyre combo.

I dont think so it went with quiet a jolt, something like being forced out of place and then going back also made quite a thud.

Hi Bob, std tyres for your vehicle are 255/65/16 or 255/55/18. Your current tyres are lower profile making them ride harder and they are wider so might be catching on the front control arms - giving that chassis effect.

You could have a look underneath and if neccesary adjust the bump stumps so that you can't turn quite so sharply.

Hi Bob, yes it is very simple, it's literally just a matter of unscrewing a bolt-like thing 1 or 2 turns on each of the front wheel hubs to ensure the tyres don't catch on any part of the car.

The way you do it is:

1. Turn the steering to right to it's extreme, then look at the rear of the tyre to see if it is catching on anything. If it is you need to unwind the OPPOSITE SIDE steering stop perhaps 1 full turn, then check for clearance.

2. Repeat on the other side.

Make absolutely sure you have found the correct bolt before unscrewing anything.

Not had chance to look undeneath today due to it lashing it down here, but have spoken to the dealer i bought it off and he is having the car next week to check things out.

Will let you know the results.
