Hello, hope someone can answer my question – I have recently purchased a 2002 Freelander TD4. I am very happy with the Freelander as its perfect for my work (Joiner / builder) as I can get all my tools in the back and driver it off road on building sites etc. My question relates to the turbo, when accelerating the speed picks up ok and is consistent through the rev range – but with all other Turbo diesels I’ve had in the past you can feel the turbo kick-in at around 2000 – 3000 rpm. This doesn’t seem to happen with the Freelander?

The Freelander is an automatic and it’s the first auto I’ve owned – not sure if that’s the reason?

and .. it has a 'variable vane' turbo .. as opposed to a 'fixed vane with wastegate' type
the vanes are moved by an actuator that's connected to a solenoid-wired-to-the-ecu ..
energy that makes it move it's vanes comes from the engine's vacuum system

what i know about the td4 comes from reading LandyZone posts .. and posted links of a technical note
( so stick around this site .. lots of tech. know how between the various LZ residents )
my hippo be the 1st vehicle i've owned that's of the computer-controlled (engine management - ecu ) type
