Hi All...while doing some general snooping around the engine bay I noticed that the Turbo waste gate arm seems stuck, although will move some If I grab it with a pliars and apply some serious pressure.

But I don't appear to have any obvious symptoms.

What would be the symptoms of a sticking wastegate in a Td5 auto and is the marginal movement I can observe with the pliars enough or should it move more and more freely?

Thanks.

so the only symptom of a sticking turbo wastegate on a TD5 auto would be a power loss? ok but would the difference be dramatic and is there another way to diagnose? It could have been sticking a bit for a long time and perhaps I haven't noticed.

Also...anyone able to explain how the arm is supposed to behave. Is it possible to observe it doing something while the engine is ticking over with the hood up?

waste gate will only open fully at full boost, you wont notice any symptoms at tick over, power loss is noticeable as car drives normally till ecu sees over boost, its possible to drive around and not notice if you drive slow and steady, but if you put your foot down you will

The actuator arm has to fight against a 16psi spring, so in short the arm should be REALLY stiff but move toward the actuator housing if grabbed with some molegrips and pulled. It's perfectly normal.

You can check the actual wastegate by unclipping the actuator arm from it, the wastegate lever will then be really free.... (it's just an e-clip but might be hard to get to with the heatshield in place)

thanks...interestingly I mentioned to my local mechanic who's not a disco expert but disconnected the hose that's connected to the bell housing to check for some suction...i.e. he was testing that there was a vacuum and found there was none. I then read up and it seems that hose is a pressure hose. Can anyone explain the difference?

Yeah a vacuum hose is a vacuum hose and a pressure hose is a pressure hose. If he thinks Turbos work on vacuum don't use him again.;);)
