Hi, I have recently purchased a 1999 TD5 Discovery. There seems to be a lot of free play in the transmission when taking up drive and on the overrun. It can be felt through the pedals but there is no audible clonk on taking up drive or when easing off. is this normal or is it a sign of impending troubles?
Thanks,Will.

Hi Will, its not normal:mad: but it's very common and annoying.......to get rid of it u have to overhaul the whole transmission "link" : TB > props/uj's > diffs > drive shafts > CVJ's. ......the clonk will come later :(

My 300tdi manual did this if you went into reverse and then forward.Greased the prop shafts and it vanished :D

If u'll feel an abnormal backlash(more than 10degrees) turning the propshafts(especially the front one) both ways then no grease or oil will help.....this kind of backlash in the transmission link is a cumulative sum of the frazzle of all components.......the bigger one is from the diff's or the TB's wear.

Understood, but I think it is still probably worth getting in their with the grease gun, gives me a chance to check on levels, condition etc.

With regard to using the ramps - that is extraordinarily kind of you to offer such assistance to a complete stranger. I would very much like to take you up on your offer and will PM you in due course :)

Many thanks,Will.

my 90 does that and has the clunk
i just turn radio up 2nd to last on was works motor and done it the entire 3 years i had it

i just drive wi my ipod in my left ear and ignore it
infact when i drive my demolition foremans 110 on occasion its funny it not being there

its like ice on the inside in winter it just is

I know what you mean, many moons ago I had a petrol series 3. That car sounded like the world was coming to an end every time I drove it; in comparison, this Discovery is like a Rolls Royce but it is nice to have things working as well as they can isn't it?
Regards,Will.:)
