my 1998 P38 4.6 has developed a noise in the back end. It is on a coil spring conversion.

Every now and then there is a serious sounding thump from the rear end somewhere, this generally only happens every now and then, and seems to be brought on by shifting from reverse to drive, and then pulling away briskly.

It also seems to happen on odd occaisions when pulling away from standstill in a hurry.

It generally seems to only happen once, and then doesn't seem to happen again for quite a while, at least not on the same journey.

On one occaision I started to pull away, hesitated as the car in front did not set off, and then floored it to be met with a repeated banging under the floor in the boot / back seat area - this almost sounded like a chain jumping on a sprocket, at least thats the best thing I can liken it to.

I have been underneath and checked for worn suspension bushes, there is no obvious slop in the prop shaft uj's, and i cant feel any wear in the rear wheel bearings.

I know this doesnt mean a great deal, but it sailed through its MOT last month, and the tester commented on how sound it appeared underneath.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated - it is starting to concern me as I dont want to keep driving it and cause a catastrophic failure somewhere.

Cheers

Rob
