Transmission/engine seals

Howrya All?

Quick question. Landrover (series 111) has been bleeding oil all over the place, getting steadily worse. Had an expert of 30 years look at it (for other problems as well) and he reckons seals are all shot to pieces. Now, is this a massive job, especially for a novice? Does the engine have to come out?

should that be gaskets then?

. yer gort different seals and different gaskets. each takes a diferent amount of time to do and each has a different degree of difficultly..
what yer gonna be asking next? how long is a piece of string perhaps?

About a yard...

6 and 3/8 inches as defined by the big book of measurments.. an interesting fact is that in the annex to the book it tell you what the metric replacment is. I.E. the imperial Baw Hair has bin replaced by the Metric Pube.

you're mistaken. a yard is the standard length for a short bit of rope

I heard something being mumbled about seals between engine and transmission.......

a chain is eggsackly 22 short lengths of rope....fact.

Somebody could try something radical like giving a serious, helpful answer.....so long as it int me... aint been an done mine yet so I know bugger all, tho she drips like a very drippy thing that drips

the length of a chain for the use of surveying is 1/10 of a furlong, converted to 22 mteres. its correct name is a "gunthers chain" this method of measuring roads is still used today

If it is between the engine & transmission you will have to split them. Opinions differ as to whether it is best to remove the engine or gearbox. If it is the rear crankshaft seal I believe you need to drop the sump (not sure, I've never done it) a bit difficult if the engine is sitting on the floor!
I should go back to your adviser, or find another, and try and get some more specific information.
Changing oil seals isn't technically difficult, although if you haven't got the knack it may not be successful, but may invoilve dismantling heavy parts of the vehicles.
Potentially expensive if you can't do it yourself, so best to work out how much oil you are actually loosing.
