My 2001 P38 diesel would'nt change gear and was only capable of 35MPH with the engine revving it's socks off. The Transmission Controller has failed. Trying to locate one to suit the vehicle it seems the system was changed in 1999 so earlier model units won't work properly.

I've fitted a second hand unit from a petrol P38 as a temporary measure to get me mobile. The low gears thump on the overrun others change OK but a fault shows on the computer screen and the Sport mode won't work.

Does anyone out there know if these units can be repaired or does anyone happen to have one from a scrap post 1999 vehicle?

Think you had better get the codes read.

Thanks for the responses. I had the computer on the car which showed no faults recorded! The unit now on the car is for a petrol engine so will give odd results but does get me mobile in the short term while I look for a diesel version replacement.

Looking over the net there are a number for sale with the vast majority for petrol engines. If I can't get a version to mate up with the 1999 change I am encouraged by the remarks that Datatec seems to have had success with an earlier type.

Wonder what the changes were from 1999 on does anyone know?

The part numbers are different but physically the early and late one looked the same. It may be as simple as internal component changes, I don't know. I didn't try the sport button, but everything else worked and there was no detectable difference in the gear changes.:)

Think the petrol has a different valve block that would maybe alter changes.

The fault showing on the display reads GEARBOX FAULT. No doubt this is due to the petrol controller being installed instead of the diesel unit. Ive been told by a main dealer garage that if you do'nt fit the matched unit for the vehicle it could mess up the solenoids and create all sorts of problems. The thought occurs to me that the unit that was fitted to the car may not be the original one. As it seems it is a common fault this could be the case. The dealer was having difficulty in locating the correct unit reference!

Datatec did you get the fault message on the display? It is possible that only minor changes have been made over time using better components as they are developed but the function remains the same. If as you point out the gearbox has not changed.

No fault messages. On some models the ECU has to be calibrated to the gearbox, my memory is not too good but I think the calibration applied to the 4.6 only. I'd have to go and check RAVE to be certain. Petrol and diesel ECU's are certainly different so you may well get error messages using the wrong one and it may also conceivably cause shift problems as the diesel has a fly by wire accelerator but the petrol is mechanical.
