Hi i was wondering if anybody could give me some advise,
I have a Range Rover classic 1993 L reg 3.9 efi auto,
and the Auto diff lock on the transfer box is locked in and it
was winding up the transmission, so i have taken the front prop shaft off
for now, the thing is has anybody converted an auto diff locking transfer box
to a manual one, and what would i need to convert it over and is it a big job,
or should i just get a reconditioned unit,
i was just going to just get the Viscous Coupling from ashcroft
but i think the transmission wind up has done some damage to the box as there is a noticeable whine and it seams to be coming from the transfer box and there is a lot of play when i have had the RR up on axle stands

Thanks will look in to that and get some prices from some brakers for the parts

you would need the chassis bracket with mounts ,and if yours is a direct hanbrake cable then you old assembly will swap if no youd bracket on t/box side for cable from donor

If you are going for a used T/box be prepared for more transmission noise than your current unit. The LT230 was always louder than the chain driven B/W & if you end up with a high mileage example you may find it annoying on a long journey. I would have thought replacing your VCU would be a better bet, yes it could seize again in time but that's thousands of miles away & it sounds like a lot of work to convert. I like both the simplicity & the manual diff-lock of the older LT230T but only because my current car has it, the last time I had a VCU seizing up I just had it changed (around £500 if I remember right) - job done.
