I have a '93 200TDi. I am getting a fair amount of drive train backlash when changing gear and a distinct clunk when starting off especially when moving from rev to 1st and and 1st to rev.
The clunk and, I think the backlash, seems to be in the transfer box.
Is it likely to be the transfer box or could it be gearbox?
Is this a common problem?
How much backlash is normal in the prop shafts? I imagine it should be the same for both frt and rr prop shafts.
Many thanks for any advice.

check the gearbox output shaft as if it doesn't have a cross drilled Transfer box input gear the splines wear.

I would check half shafts, diff's, prop shafts and cv joints for play 1st.

mine dose the same, it seems to be the rear diff area I think mine is the diff slowly dieing

Thanks for all the input, comments that is not shafts.
I'm petty sure it is in the transfer box as I was underneath while a trusted friend rocked it back and forth.
I will start with the PTO cover and work out. There is a tad too much play in the frt axle but not enough to account for all of it.
Either way it looks like a winter evening job!!
