ok so here's the update after today, run continuity tester from the wire at back of the cluster and onto a known good earth point wiggled the hell out of the wires and it didnt earth out so i've rules out it touching somewhere and put it down to a bad connection or almost split wire, no auto electrician i can call on.

as for the more work for myself looking into changing the wire.
it will take me about 10 mins to run a new cable from the transducer to the clocks but it will take me forever to try get to the wires and trace them to look at insulating/repairing.

dont think it will matter but i can also confirm it wont be going to my cruse control cause i aint got one lol

I did a bit of kidology but don't tell anyone. I book my car into a garage sure it was Kwikfit or someone and asked them to check the alternator for me, they never say no thinking they'll get a new alternator out of it. When they said the alternator seems ok I asked the sparky if he would see what problem was for me I said I'll give him a drink. Come to think now it was halfords.
He checked and found I had a weak output possibly a broken wire, he couldn't repair but he told me the problem.
