ok so here's the update after today, run continuity tester from the wire at back of the cluster and onto a known good earth point wiggled the hell out of the wires and it didnt earth out so i've rules out it touching somewhere and put it down to a bad connection or almost split wire, no auto electrician i can call on.
as for the more work for myself looking into changing the wire.
it will take me about 10 mins to run a new cable from the transducer to the clocks but it will take me forever to try get to the wires and trace them to look at insulating/repairing.
dont think it will matter but i can also confirm it wont be going to my cruse control cause i aint got one lol
