Quick one.

If I want (I do) a 1.2 disco transfer box does it have to come from a manual.

What I'm asking is will one off an auto box be the same?

Probably a dumb question I imagine, but then I am pretty dim.

mine came off an auto box.asked round the breakers but no one seemed to know.just have to swap handbrake over and speedo drive

Yeah - just did mine yesterday, you need to drill and tap the back holes for the handbrake bracket. Took me about 5 hours to do on my own yesterday that included painting all the brackets, drilling and tapping holes etc...

So that was from an auto disco?

is the drillin an tappin required for all disco t boxes?

Yes - and if your getting a disco box check for the diff lock connector as some do not have the connector on them (although the internal parts are there)

The stick will move but it ain't going to be connected to anything!

Took mine out on the motroway tonight, bloody hell what a difference, cruise at 70 and I can hear - and I think it might go quite a bit faster now... I THINK...

Lush :)

I have to do this very soon

Ontop of the transfer box are two connectors that the shift stick connects to....

The one that moves forwards to back that sticks out of the side of a small cover on the top moves the selector fork between H,N,and L (i'm not going to get into the Range v's Ratio argument here)

There is a second one sightly furether forward what is on a shaft sticking out of the top with a lever on top that moves round. This connects again to the shift stick and when you move it from side to side rotates the shaft around moving the diff locking mechanism.

Many discos don't have this connector on the top so your shift stick will move freely from side to side but won't move anything inside the box! as it wont be connected to anything

Correct

It was worth all £40 in my opinion. Some people think it doesn't make a difference but it certainly calms then engine on the motorway, not to mention you can go much further in each gear. The turbo is also at a good speed at about 56-60mph which is usually the most efficient speed for diesels so I will brim the tank and do a fuel consumption check now. I am hoping for about 90miles to the gallon.

This is only on disco2's..... 200 & 300Tdi had the manual lock (or viscous where there was no mechanical differential lock for the driver to select)

I fitted one to my 110 a few weeks back.... excellent modification!

ah ha!

so if i get one from a td5 i need to have a good look first.

£40 a complete bargain.

how many miles can they generally do and still be ok?

also how long is a piece of string?

Well you find ones from Discos are generally in much better nick as they don't get such a hard time.

My 90's old LT230 has done 170,000miles and it was changed as it was clunking a lot. The one in my Disco has done 130,000miles and the drive train is clunkless.

you dont need to drill and tap holes. You can drill a hole in the bracket to do the same thing and space it with a prop shaft nut, or you can swap the handbrake unit off the back of the box - about 8 bolts.

I'm sure that'll all make sense once I look at it :)

Takes 3 minutes and you've done it properly Tarq!

mine is done properly! I can't afford a tap set, so whats wrong with swapping the handbrake unit? Or, when that broke, putting the old one back on and drilling the defender bracket? I had drill bits you see...

Honestly... Accusing me of a bodge... :)

I have a Transferbox for sale from a 200tdi Disco but was looking more like £60 to be fair can deliver within reasonable distance
