Nah it's the other rod behind the axle linking the two hubs. One end has a left hand thread the other end has a right hand thread on the track rod ends, when you turn the track rod you either unscrew or screw up the track rod ends making the track rod longer or shorter.
 
for a rough -un, measure the distance between the front 2 wheels end to end dead centre, half way around sort of thing. then measure the back of the wheels again half way up. these should read the same... i think. if not adjust the track rod ends. best done on axle stands :D and with the aid of a friend or the scowling wife
 
ye thats the rod i meant it goes between the hubs, the steering damper is by this. theres no thread on this that i can see but theres 2 clamps on one end and one on the other. its a 94 200tdi by the way
 
is the damper near the rear of the front wheels on a disco then? thought they wernt that diff to offenders?

take a pic of what you think is the track rod and we will see from there. or, it will say in the haynes manual
