A 23 foot caravan behind a hippo bloody hell, next thing you'll be complaining about is the tail wagging the dog.

I had to tow half a ton of soil using a 100kg unbraked trailer with my old TD4 once and I could definitely feel it on the back and it took a lot more effort to stop the thing. I was quite surprised how noticeable it was. Dread to think what it would be like with 1400kg on the back!

You Freelander should be able to tow 1400kg with no problems without being chipped. May be you need to service it? New fuel, oil and air filters, change the engine oil, run some injector cleaner through it, change the pcv filter and then try it again.

Oh dear I just brought an 03 TD4 Freelander for the same purpose tell me I haven't made a mistake though my Bailey is only 1050 kgs

I tow an Abbey GTS, 20.5 foot long and about 1100 Kg with a manual TD4 and have no problems. Keeping ahead of the trucks is effortless. I've done all the usual stuff, egr bypass, pcv upgrade, silicone hoses and a damn good service.
