I need to pick some stone up from the quarry which has a steep hill out ( obviously). I have a twin axle 2 ton braked trailer and a 200tdi Def with HD clutch. Just wanted to know, if i pull away in low, can i stay in low all the way home or should i change to high once i'm on the flat. Also do i have to stop when changing from hi to low?
Done it in a vivaro no problem but never in a Defender.

From the Defender Owner's Handbook -

Changing from low to high on the move:

Changing from ’L’ (low) to ’H’ (high) can be achieved without stopping the vehicle, as follows:

1. Apply slight backward pressure to the transfer gear lever in preparation for changing.

2. Then, in three simultaneous moves, depress the clutch, release the accelerator and pull the transfer lever into neutral.

3. Release the clutch pedal for approximately 3 seconds before depressing it again and moving the transfer lever firmly into the high position.

4. Finally, select a suitable main gear, release the clutch and continue driving in the normal way.

NOTE: After a little practice, this operation can be carried out smoothly and quickly by using firm, positive moves.

Overwise known as...............double de-clutching :rolleyes::D

Point taken.............I really must try and remember not everyone learnt to drive on a Fordson Major :doh:
I learned on a Fordson Major too,and how to cope with steep hills and rubbish footbrake[transmition handbrake was handy in an emergancy]As for driving with a heavy load in low box for some distance, done it many times with no problems,but some say you should not use 5 gear in this situation. Anyhow if your getting that far up the box you should realy be in high :blabla::blabla: cheers.

The problem is if OP would read there owner manual, they would. But most do not read the owners manual
Thats very true but in my case, i have an 88 110, made up from various doner vehicles with 5 different keys.An owners manual is the last thing i think of. Also reading text is not as helpful as listening to other owners experiences and if it wernt for members asking questions that could be found in owners manuals, this site would have a lot of blank spaces.
That said, i do appreciate other more experianced owners opinions.:)

Thanks for that, i wasnt sure how long i could drive in low, or if is was just for off road situations.
