Towing ropes!

I've been using tow straps, bougth them last year from frog island 4x4, but want to get some decent tow rope...

I've used the kinetic rope a few times and seen it being used and its incredible how it stores the energy and them pulls the stranded vehicle out..

does anyone use this kind of rope?

I just think its good that its kind of elastic so you dont get that sudent bang when pulling someone out?

i got 2 of um now 1 front and 1 back cheaper than winches and they dont seem to drag me battery down hardly at all
just have to make sure hook up points are all 100% safe

I use 3t lifting straps as they have certified tags on em with a 7:1 breaking strain. Kinetics are good if used correctly and i like them as a tow rope coz they don't suddenly suddenly jerk if used slowly, and are very effective when used as intended but a lot of people I know hate them due to potential damage they can inflict.

Well thats what iv been using! plenty of use as well! but i know how to tow but a kinetic one would be nice!

Think he means snapping! but tbh iv never seen one of them snap unless there mouldy old things that you shouldn't use!

mmm.. well, snapping even the tow straps can snap if they are not maintained properly

Thing is with a lifting strap... once they're used for towing they is scrap

Yer but you wont get the same sort of aftermath from a strap snapping than you will a kinetic

People go for these big tonnage ropes and straps but what are the recovery points on the car rated at? Personally if something was going to go I would want it to be the rope and not a D Shackle, Jate ring or the bolts holding my steering guard on

So something like that is better than a strap when recovering a stuck vehicle due to the rope absorbing some of the shock?

But straps better for dead tows when vehicle isn't stuck due to no shock?

I've seen a rotten rear crossmember ripped off a stuck series 3 and hit the back of another vehicle. the bloke in the other vehicle did check with the series 3 owner that his chassis was in good condition first. to which he said it was fine thankfully nobody was hurt but if it wasn't for a dog guard with a hi-lift across it, it could have been a lot worse

Got a tow strap and shackles off eBay from a brilliant seller, will dig his details out. It's rated for 6 or 7 tonne and I've tested it on a fully loaded electricians van that weighed in at 2.8 tonnes and the Landy pulled it no problem on an icy road.

We even pulled it sideways as he had no of turning around and obviously a strap is much better for this as it won't scratch or dent a bumper. Probably not advisable however unless it's very icy.

That said a tow bar is a must if the vehicle being towed has had a failure of the brakes, cam belt e.t.c. Also towed a plumbers L200 which was around 2 tonne with on of these when his belt snapped. Perhaps get both?

best of both worlds, avoid KERR ropes and buy a strap than has some elasticity. I know ARB make some excellent straps with 20% stretch

Just for reference Griff, do you know if the tow straps are technically safer upon failing than say a rope is? They seem as though they may hold together a bit better perhaps?

i never used straps to lift mini engines out just used to get hold of the bugger with our kid n lift the thing out

id agree with that.Get something designed for the job.I used procomp straps.

Well for how slow i am. i hope ur 8ft tall & 5ft wide cus ul be hanging on for a while!.

Yeah tbh the trouble is that working on your own its alot safer & easier

Been there done that dropped it on my foot lol
