I was talking to someone at work the other day. He asked what the top speed my S3 SWB 2.25 Diesel (no overdrive) could do. I told him that 45 mph in 4th gear was about all. From other posts on ths forum that seems right.

My colleague said he used to have one and thinks that 60 should be possible. I don't believe him on this.

What do you think?

i can get around 45 mph out of my na diesel, don't think the speedo is terribly accurate though and the needle swings about all over the place.

mostly i just potter about so 30 is about what i can get up to before having to slow down :D

Yeah about 45 is about right I would say...maybe 50 if you dare???

(My 2.25 diesel 88" will sit quite happy at abot 60-65, but that's with an OD and 7.50 wheels)

my series 3 88 petrol 2.25 just about gets to forty must get the sat nav out and check it i have 16 x750 tyres just wonder if that would make a difference

55 hapily with engine , injectots / pump set nicely, 60 out of my petrol 2.25, but have done it with a diesel, nearly rattled it to bits tho

2.25 Diesel with OD, it will do 50-55 at a push, but not a pleasant experience. Like others have said pottering at 30 is fine.

I got 63 (on the gps) out of my 4 speed 2.25 petrol S3 on the M3 one morning. I was drafting a lorry for ages, pulled out of his slipstream and slingshotted past him, like a bloody NASCAR!

On a normal A road, I quite often see 55, but it's most comfortable at about 40 / 45 (my sphincter's twitching starts becoming disconcertingly rapid above that)

I think the 95 printed on the speedo is a tad optimistic

I remember my granddad frequently going motorway speeds (70+) in the series 3 88", it did have an overdrive and bigger wheels fitted though as well as a 2.5 out a 90

Stick it on ebay then.... thas 600 quid kerching:D:D:D

well the midget had called dibs on it but she was rather ungrateful so it may be an ebay job

told her I'd spent 4 hours releasing it from its rusty tomb, saw it and said oh……..more landrover bits

But the top speed for yours at the minute is in single digits ;)

Not for mine ;) its now got a 5 speed box mated up as of today and soon to be a salisbury HD rear axle and standard fender front axle off an 89 TDi

its all well and good doing these "speeds" ( use the term speed loosely ) but its stoppin the fukcer after, the shoes and drums were never meant to take it, i hapily plod round at 30 - 40 in me 2.25 petrol ser2
