Top speed from Series 3?

My 2.25 petrol engine could do 70mph in 4th, no OD - was noisy mind.

The 200-di lump currently is happier at 60mph in 4th - still no OD.

Hard work keeping it straight on a motorway at 60 though - i'll sit at 60 as i don't like upsetting the lorries, but, that's all i concentrate on, the CB is ignored, some back ground music and just 100% concentration on the landy and road.

i'd suggest you go through your steering and suspension then to correct it's faults, oil the relay, check the swivel pins/wheelbearings, check all 6 TREs and carefully adjust the freeplay out of the steering box

maybe even tyres and or pressures could be your faults

you can relax nicely at speed in both my Series LRs, the only time there should possibly be any upset on the motorway is where it's heavily tramlined, i can run up to 80mph with minimal risk of wandering with my 200tdi's, the thing that keeps my speed down is noise and fuel costs

Oh I'm fully aware that the steering / swivels are not in the best of health - not bad, i mean it's not like the car continously wonders, but, they are old parts and are on the list of parts to renew in the future.

Tyres and wheel bearings are good though!

60 but wouldn't want to go any faster than that due to the engine noise. 109 series 3 Santana. 2 and a quarter Turbo. ;)

I cruse at 45/50 in mine on A roads, 30 or less on back lanes, also in 4th with OD I can keep just above idle and do 30mph, keeps noise down abit!

They must make miles bigger in England... :)
IIA 109 with a good 2.25 petrol (Diesel cam), paper air cleaner and properly tuned will cruise at 60-65 all day in overdrive (and has for many years, so no BOOM). 235/85-16 radial tyres at the right pressures for the vehicle (chalk line set).

2.25D? Owned one once. 45 MPH pottering about sounds right...hated that engine.

More seriously, i never had an issue with it as a motorway vehicle - was my daily driver for many years.

37 MPH with a 1-ton transfer case? I'd be looking for a decent transfer case ------ got 2-3 of them here I'd give you but the shipping would be a bitch. :) . Take you a day to swap out, and this way your speedometer calibration with a stock speedometer will be more or less right. RRC diffs in that assemblage is going to get really confusing unless you fit one of those aftermarket speedometers that works off a magnet on the driveshaft.

TLDR: 2.25 petrol, Weber carb, Fairey OD & 205/16 tyres 70MPH GPS whilst fully loaded

Time to revive a 10 year old thread… again!

I’ve clocked 5k miles in my series since the start of April, most of it motorway runs from Norfolk-London-Cardiff and back. Without OD I would sit at about 48 on the Speedo for a cruise, could push it to 55. Got a ‘decent’ Fairey OD (that spews oil over 50 and turns me grey, and has the dreadful coasting noise). Used to run it about 50-55 but slowly grown in confidence (and used noise cancelling earbuds).

Anyway, recently been doing house move from London to Norfolk in it and have been running it at 60-65 on the speedo (helps maintain enough throttle to avoid coasting noise). Just now when loaded to the rafters (and some - more went in after pic taken ) managed to get it to 70 on the GPS (75 speedo) on 205/16 tyres

Should think it might do 75 GPS probably 80 on taller tyres, but my fear for the overdrive got the better of me.

Would be keen to know if anyone can top it! Will try to test it on my 255/85’s.

My 200Tdi Series with 3.54:1 diffs clocked 92mph GPS (on a private road). Can’t remember what size tyres, might have been 8.25 x 16 or 7.00 x 16.

S2 with tdi std everything else, 60mph screaming the nadgers i off it, so assuming the series engines rev to the same max rpm, then by logic the speed should be the same?

Is that with overdrive? I’d imagine a diesel would have run out of puff by then. What tyres?
