That is my question.

Does any one know if it's worth flushing the engine with a cheap 10/40 to clean it out and then doing the filters and going fully Synth.

Or, it's a waste of time and money.

Cheers ALL.

I always use about 250-500ml of ATF as its full of detergent during the last 10 mile journey.

Seemt to keep tappers quiet.

Doing a full flush with oil can't hurt but it costs.

mostly just change regulary semi sythetic is fine ,its lack of regular changes that could cause wear, as you need to remove contaminents which you best do by dropping oil

It another personal choice this.

I do flush the old oil, but not by the method the OP mentions which is just an extra oil change, albeit for a very short time.

I use fully synthetic 5W-30 C3 to LL04 spec and as I do a high mileage of mainly long journeys my oil change intervals are extended to 12K

I put in a 375ml can of TEC 2000 Oil Flush and run the engine for 30 minutes then drain the lot and change the filter.

If I had an engine of unknown history I would be flushing and changing the oil asap.

I'd also flush before change of oil spec.

I'm open to criticism for over spec with my choice of oil, just as with upping the spec of my tyres, but at the moment I have 5 vehicles all of them with over 120K and never had any lubrication problems.

"Oil is the cheapest mechanic you can get." my old Dad used to say.

Owned my td4 for 11 years and have never felt the need to use an engine flush , It has annual oil & filter change using 5w-30 fully synthetic Castrol oil , I should point out my annual mileage is only 3000 miles as I use a scooter when weather is good . Modern oils hold the contaminates well and the oil used should last 10x the mileage I do ?
But If you want to use a flush it can't do any harm !

i normally use engine flush otherwise your just putting clean oil in a dirty engine. Again, i would prefer to do more regular oil changes than use fully synth

Hello all.

Many thanks for all your replies.

I am using a fully synth oil at the moment and changing it every 8 thou = Once a year.
Just trying to think of a way to keep the engine clean, or am going OTT.

Any thoughts welcome.

Cheers.

I admit to flushing mine. Did it by changing the oil at short intervals. Hence using the same oil as I nornally would. Didn't see the point of introducing cheap oil or cleaners in to my engine.

Hello Hippo.

Got crossed lines here. Iwas just thinking of doing a quick oil change with cheap oil, running the engine for 20 mins and dropping it.

To clean it out so to speak. Then refill with F/synth
