We thought this when looking for a replacement for our Ford Kuga. We had ordered a Vauxhall Grandland X, but Vauxhall changed the spec for the 2019 model of the vehicle we ordered, making it not such a good deal. So now we've ordered a Mazda CX5 with a petrol engine. This should give the same cost per mile as our current Kuga.

Yeah, problem with the Freelander is; the k series sounds like a bit of hard work, and the V6 is a bit thirsty! Interesting to see the k series is quicker (0-60) and only a few less mpg than the td4 (this is using the auto trader stats..)

If diesel goes up nearly everything physical yer buy will go up. It won't happen. Theres a lot of worry about diesel. Trucks use it. It will be around for some time.

Good point well made, plus it's only a ~£2000 car so compared to my current monthly spending on a car, I will still be up!

A fella at work has just bought a 1.8 as it happens, he got the 'milenium' edition pre facelift, but he only pays £200 tax. £315 isn't a million miles out split over the 12months though.

Road tax does vary across engines and years so it's worth consifering. Later years tend to cost more.

Yes the 06 plate td4's have two tax brackets, the earlier ones are about £315 and the later ones after around the end of March are something like £500 so consider that too if you're looking at FL1's of that age.

I did notice this, I think it's just the 06 years that enjoy £500/year tax.

The wife's second Freelander was a 1.8 50th edition. That was fully loaded with options. Definitely a very nice vehicle to own, and cheap too.

Yeah there are a surprising number of nice options available.

Insurance is also surprisingly expensive, about the same as the 1 series!

My 2001 V6 was about £100 PA cheaper to insure than my current TD4.

That's the CC master switch. CC was an option, but only in conjunction with the auto box.

That also makes the miles/£ cheaper... In a way..? Haha I say it's expensive, it's still only 400/yr which I can't imagine is any cheaper.

Interesting, wonder if it's just like a speed hold kind of off/on system...?

My current TD4 SE auto on an 05 costs £365 PA. My previous 01 V6 ES cost £274 PA to insure.

The CC is armed by turning on the CC master switch. This boots up the CC ECU (under the driver's seat), allowing it to take speed signals from the ABS ECU and feed any necessary corrections to the engine ECU. There are paddles on the steering wheel which tell the CC ECU to set and restore speeds.

The CC master switch can be left active all the time. Any restore information is cleared when the master switch is off, or the ignition is switched off.

Same logic in the 322 control.
But I would say be careful if you push the “restore” if your present speed differs greatly from you last preset.
Ours seems to think it needs to change down 4 gears and get to the set point as if it was on a drag strip.
Similar results shown when towing sometimes too. So try it so you get used to it’s reactions.

CC would be nice, don't have it now. But I do have a limiter..

The CC set/ res switches are on the right of the steering wheel. The audio controls are on the left of the steering wheel.

Yes. Standard on all but the lowest spec FL1

I like CC and use it all the time. Radar guided CC is even better to use, especially on the motorway. No FL1 has radar CC though, so don't go looking for that.

Haha I may be looking for a while!

To be honest, my grand plan is to sell the BMW and the midget, buy a Freelander workhorse and then an XK8 for any trips/weekends away. So the Jag will be the only one that CC would be really handy!

Good job I like tinkering with cars! (which I have missed with the BM and hated paying them a fortune to service..). Although hopefully they won't both break at the same time...
