Tired Tyres

Hi All

The time has come to re-boot the freelander and I am looking for advice from all you fine folk.

I have the option to re-shoe the original 17's (225 55 17) or reduce size down to 16 (215 65 16).

I haven't offroaded this freelander yet as at the moment even pot holes are more than I care to put this one near for fear of spinal injury!!!! The old one ran on 16's and was great off road.

What would be your suggestion for 1, the tyre size and 2, which new tyres to go for.

I am lookingn for a reasonable off-road tyre that will be ok on road and last longer than the khumo rubbish that is on there at the moment 8000 mls nearly bold!!!

General Grabber AT2 tyres - a little bit more noisy, but seem to be hard wearing, but good off road and fantastic in the recent snow - absolutely sure footed - not even noticed the ice underfoot.. Not sure that yu can get them in 17" tho.

I also am in the same situation, dont go off roading but do pull a caravan that gets a bit hard work when on wet grass / mud. Considering something like AT tyres (all terain)
Awaiting any further updates.

Had the Grabber AT2's on my car for about 6 months now.Have to say I'm very impressed, not a huge amount of road noise on tarmac driving and good grip on snow, wet grass and muddy terrain.
Had mine fitted at home by Event Tyres - Event Tyres - Mobile Tyre Fitting for Car, 4x4 and Run Flat Tyres for a pretty good price.

I had a similar dilemma...

I was running 225/55/17s and wanted to keep buying the Michelin Synchrones as they lasted very well (circa 40K) and grip well etc. At £130+ each, they were very expensive, so when the two fronts got to 3mm I sold them on (£350!!) and have bought a set of 15" alloys (£42 for four with tyres from eBay!!)

I stumbled across 4x Colway A/T tyres brand new on a buy it now of £99.00 with free delivery. I am yet to fit them as the current tyres have plenty of life in them, however my father has covered 20,000 miles and still has over half the tyre depth remaining.

My advice is go with the 16's as tyres will be cheaper and the ride will be less bumpier due to more sidewall cushioning.

I'm actually using 35mm spacers, came from Germany made out of high grade aluminium billet. Cost a fortune but good quality, certainly help the old girl stick around corners.....!

got michelin latitudes on mine, just bought 4 for £315 in vat from Costco about 4 weeks ago. although full price would have been just over £400, as they had a 20% off a set of 4. Wouldn't have minded these at full price.

pretty impressed with the ride quality, fairly quiet. Just come home in the heavy snow from Essex to Kent, didn't feel it scrabble or slide once.
