Well the old radiator went quite mysteriously, I just drove it out the garage and the thing sprang a leak in the core, new radiator was hot from the top ever since. I heard that often the radiator can blow if the head gasket goes, and I can only think that when I started it the pressure was enough to blow the old radiator.

Thanks

Rads also fail due to ageing. Whatever, the RAD should get hot all over, if it does not (on the diesel) the baffle in the centre of the header has failed. Fix the engine and it will just fail again if the RAD is not doing it's job.

Yes agreed, however I'm going to need to do the head gasket anyway. I had many back and forths with the radiator manufacturer and apart from rip it open and send pictures its difficult to prove. With the head gasket done that will be everything changed so if it still over heats I will be seeking a new radiator from them.

Thanks

HGF seems quite rare on the M51, it's usually a cracked head:eek:

Oh bugger... am I right in thinking if it is a cracked head I will see signs when I take it off? Is it as simple as replacing it if that is the case or is it a real pain in the arse?

Thanks

Maybe, maybe not. The constant overheating may have taken its toll over time and cracks maybe easily visible, equally they could be tiny and you'd need to look closely. I believe theres a dye you can get to show up cracks. Either way if youre that sure head is the problem you can send it off to a professional to see if it is fixable or more favourably find replacement.
