I've got a new job which means my beloved TD5 90 CSW does 90 miles a day now. I was initially banking on 30MPG but, running the tank as low as I dare then filling right up, and reseting the mileometer etc, is getting me between 34 and 36MPG consistently!
I have the Ashcroft Disco gearing in my transfer box and I believe the previous owner remapped it for towing a horsebox. Maybe this is a good combo for MPG
My technique is to never floor it. Try to drive without hearing the turbo whistle at all. Keep distance from the car in front and coast towards roundabouts from a fair distance (ideally early enough as to not use the brakes at all if no one is on my tail). I generally drive at 55mph on a main road too.
Now - most of you will be thinking an average of 35MPG is good enough - but I'm wondering if I can remove the prop shaft and get a few more (or is this just greedy?!). Surely running in FWD only will mean less friction through the gearbox and engine, won't it? I did this as a kid to my 4WD radio controlled car (removed the prop shaft) and it went a lot faster and the battery lasted longer
Not exactly the same I know but maybe the principal applies for defenders too.
I will clearly lose my handbrake but they are for wooses anyway......
Any other tips?
