I've got a new job which means my beloved TD5 90 CSW does 90 miles a day now. I was initially banking on 30MPG but, running the tank as low as I dare then filling right up, and reseting the mileometer etc, is getting me between 34 and 36MPG consistently!

I have the Ashcroft Disco gearing in my transfer box and I believe the previous owner remapped it for towing a horsebox. Maybe this is a good combo for MPG

My technique is to never floor it. Try to drive without hearing the turbo whistle at all. Keep distance from the car in front and coast towards roundabouts from a fair distance (ideally early enough as to not use the brakes at all if no one is on my tail). I generally drive at 55mph on a main road too.

Now - most of you will be thinking an average of 35MPG is good enough - but I'm wondering if I can remove the prop shaft and get a few more (or is this just greedy?!). Surely running in FWD only will mean less friction through the gearbox and engine, won't it? I did this as a kid to my 4WD radio controlled car (removed the prop shaft) and it went a lot faster and the battery lasted longer :p Not exactly the same I know but maybe the principal applies for defenders too.

I will clearly lose my handbrake but they are for wooses anyway......

Any other tips?

Yes drink lots of coffee and take frequent breaks, you're in danger of falling asleep at the wheel driving like that :p

Removing a prop will save a bit of fuel but it will also invalidate your insurance. Do you have road tyres on it?

If you want to save costs veg oil could be the way to go, 2 stoke oil could make a difference too.

When setting off downhill use first for a second or two then third then fifth

Make sure the air filter is getting cold clean air

When turbo comes in use a very light throttle

Go earlier to miss traffic

Stay later to miss traffic

Try driving at 50 on the flat and 55+ downhill use the downhills to gather speed for the uphills

If you hit a hill at 55 then let the Landy slow to 50 befor squeezing the throttle

cant think of any more:)

1 steal a bicycle
2 Steal next doors diesel
3 remove both props
4 remove engine & gearbox.. far too heavy
5 cadge a tow off your mates
6 call the AA every morning
7 sleep in a bin at work & hitch hike home at the weekend :D

Dial the turbo boost down then watch all the buses overtaking you. In fact catch the bus then your mpg will go through the roof.

Alternatively make your own fuel then sod the mpg. Search on here and you will be enlightened. Made me chuckle driving past all those panicking drivers filling buckets and kettles with fuel last week. You would have thought the world was ending. I never realised that so many people had legs that did not work.

Read in various threads on here that synthetic oil in gearbox & diffs can improve mpgs. Also read claims that a replacement Allisport intercooler (same size as original) will improve efficiency by 10-12%; if true would pay for its self within a year - can anyone here validate this claim?

Get a diesel car. A peugot 106 1.4 diesel will get you decent mileage

If you are getting 35mpg you are doing well specially a td5 !
