Ticking injector pump

My 300tdi Disco 1 has developed a ticking noise which starts after the engine has been idling from cold for about 5 minutes. It speeds up with the revs and appears to be coming from the front end of the injector pump where it meets the casing, for what I assume, is a drive pulley.
The only other oddity is that it lurches when pulling above 3000 rpm but this may be unconnected.
Any ideas?
Should I stop driving it?
Thanks in anticipation

Hi .. I had put a post up with a similar problem . Is it a ticking or a tapping sound like a tappet ? .. I'm not saying my problem was the same thing but mine was down to fuel starvation , after I done away with the sedimetor bowl and fitted a new lift pump and fuel pump its cured it and running great now
Might be similar :)

Beddyman,
Exactly that, very tappetty type sound.
I will do filters and sedimenter and see
if that helps

Ratty,
Not sure. I will have a look at the vac pump as well

Thanks both, keep tuned!!

If it is the injection pump ticking,it will be air ingress.Fit a clear piece of pipe between filter outlet and injection pump inlet and look for bubbles-no bubbles allowed.
Lift pump is a prime suspect-if you renew, fit a delphi.

On mine the lift pump diaphram ruptured allowing fuel into camshaft area:eek:
I could make the problem worse, putting front wheels up higher, say both front wheels on kerb-that really made it "buzz"

on the inner side of chassis by the off side rear wheel, its just a vessel that water etc can settle out of in ,i usualy bypass them they corrode and then allow air in ,fuel filter has a water drain on its underneath

thanks mate i'll give that a check today

When you locate it do not try to undo the plastic tap at its base it will probably break. Get a 11mm spanner and undo the nut at the top. This will allow the whole pot to drop down including some diesel contained within as my hair discovered!

Top advice thanks!

supporting the sedimenter in a plastic bag prior to removal helps to limit "fuel over you".Deffo undo from bolt on top

Sorted my ticking noise out! Turns out one of my injectors was missing its copper washer and the ticking was the gasses escaping that cylinder around the injector. So I fitted a new one and its all better now as expected!

Entirely my fault after I had them out last time and can't of put it back in!

Amateur mistake I know!
