Hello

I have a p38 now as well for my sins:blabla:

Anyway it has had a replacement engine but i am currently doing the heads for a change with a p38. What is the noticable difference with the cylinder bore of the thor engine over the gems??

I have tried to find out but can't find any definitive answer. Some say coil packs which mine has but then they say that the black old style pluem chamber is GEMs which mine also has.

The engine has a landrover sticker on the rocker cover stating replacement engine.

I have heard about this top hat thing but don't know exactly what is meant

Any help would be great

The blocks are the same for the gems or the thor, although the have different crank sensors I think, but basically the blocks are the same, they both have coil packs but are a different configuration, I'm pretty sure that the coils on the gems are in a straight line 8 side by side, the thor are in two packs of four set out like on a dice.

If you have the big black plenum on the top similar to that found on the earlier 3.5's and 3.9's etc then you have the 'gems' if you have a ally manifold looking like bunch of bananas on the top then you have the 'Thor' Thor started about mid 99

Have look here for a description on top hat liners V8Developments Ltd.

Look under liners in the technical section and all will be clear, I've not actually seen one that's been done myself to be able to explain what it looks like.

HTH
