Father in laws disco 3 has just had a clutch failure..

took it main dealer coz they are the closest and was quoted £1300  the labour comes in at £95 + vat an hour

phoned devon 4x4 they have quoted £50 an hour, still a lot but much better than the stealers...

Try the same comparison here in Essex mate, main stealers at around £130ph with independants about the same as yours.

Jesus that is horrendous. When i had my garage in the late sixties i was lucky to make £130.00 a week, never mind a bloody hour.

So lets see fully equiped shop with ramp and transmission cradle.
Box out say 2 1/2 hrs. 1/2 hour two handed, so 3 hours box out.
Do clutch 1/2 hour. Single handed.
Box back 3 hrs. 1/2 hour two handed, so 3 1/2 hrs box back.
That is 7 hrs total.
Give them 8 hrs total including fag break and arse scratch.

So out of £1300.00 how much are they charging for the clutch kit?

bmw in london is £190 an hour.
land rover dealer near me is £165 an hour.

And the mechanic will be lucky to see a tenner out of that. Mind you these days they are technicians arn't they, most of them don't rate a tenner so all is well.

garages are becoming rip offs all round, no wonder the average joe will have ago them
selves and meslf i cant blame them

Shame I keep fekin it up though lol
i used to do it back in the early 90's mate.
the dealers was charging 50 quids plus the victimised added tax then
i was charging 15 and the phone was always busy as was the workshop.
but the council stopped me working from home.
you cant win.

we should all have a tool box! i'll try my hand at most fixes and so far touch wood its been ok but thats mainly to the help and knowledge of you lads on here, some tutorials are so good its hard to see how you could make a mistake, im in the moddle of doing a new radiator and water pumpas some of you may know. i took pics of the whole process and wanted to put a step by step guide together and upload it. pitty there is not a section devoted to that alone that the masses can upload in to.
