Third Party only, worth it?

TPO is usually not really worth it... granted there is not usually any excess (other than young driver or any voluntary that you set), but its usually more expensive than TPF&T.

TPF&T usually carries a compulsory excess, but if you don't think your vehicle is worth anything then don't claim if it is stolen or catches fire, although if you have an accident which is your fault then you will still have to pay out with some policies (some only have an excess for theft or fire claims).

Quite often fully comp actually works out cheaper (and like TPF&T it usually carries a compulsory excess)... I think the insurer's believe that people who insure their car's on TPO or TPF&T don't care about their cars, and that their driving reflects this, i.e. greater risk of crashing.

With fully comp, as with TPF&T, if you car is stolen or catches fire, and you don't think its worth claiming, then don't. If you have an accident which is your fault, then most insurer's will let you off the excess if you don't claim for your car. This does depend on how much your excesses are though.

Makes sense, never thought of that, but they think wrong in my case.

No. There is no excess. It is illegal to have an excess on a third party insurance claim.

No. You only pay an excess when YOU claim against YOUR policy. There will be an excess for any Fire and Theft claim but not if you have an accident as YOU are not claiming. The third party is.

Not often, sometimes. It depends entirely on the age, experience and driving record of the policy holder.

You only pay an excess if YOU make a claim. If someone claims against you then there is no excess applied. If you have an accident, and don't claim, then they don't "let you off", legally there is no excess to pay as it is just a third party claim. See my first post.

Thanks for the clarification.

Still have to shop around carefully though. I just don't know how the insurance companies can justify a 50% increase in the premium though. Had no accidents or points and I'm well over 25. Maybe I'm getting too old? I'll be 60 this year.

so say u smash yr landy up and have tpft could u replace it for the difference it costs between tpft and fully comp?

Spoken like a true insurance salesman..
We could spend all our money we earn paying out on all the insurances life has to offer, just in case something goes wrong.
When money is tight, sacrifices have to be made..

Wise words indeed, I used to have TPFT of my motorbikes until I crashed. Everything is Fully comp from here on in, it's better sense in the case of that rare case when you need it.
More importantly, you don;t have to wait until the other side finally fesses up to the deed either, just replace or repair.

Not sure how it is with the UK any more, but here in Ireland some of INS companies will replace with a similar vehicle rather than pay cash! i.e. if you have a 2005 saab 9-3 TiD with 80k on the clock they replace with similar! Or our case when a tractor came out of a blind field gate and put 3/4 ton of stone through my roof that's what they did even down to the colour. Actually had a better car as the heater fan did not squeal on this one!

I digress, fully comp all the way. :D
