So my drover has had a spell of behaving itself for a while!
but that just ended.
Drove from glasgow to penrith and back the other day at a steady 2000rpm (67mph)
when i got off of the motorway on to local roads on myreturn, i noticed (not that you could miss it) a kinda knocking from the front drivers side.
the knock speeds up and slows with road speed and is heaver under load and turning!
Any comments anyone, im going to see if i can find a guide on here but if you know of one could you point me to it ta.
if you think im wrong feel free to slap me for being stupid and correct as required lol
my aim (as ever) is to do this myself so is there anything else to do at the same time (like do both sides??)
Thanks

is it a disco 1 or 2?
300tdi or 200 tdi?
age?
a few clues would be good,

the replacement job is easy enough i have just had mine to pieces and back together again, i reckon in the right circumstances you should be able to knock the job off in a couple of hours if its only the cv thats gone.

yep its an 1996 300tdi with 131K miles on clock,
is there a way to check cv before stripping it down?

try this. Taken from another web site.

if you can turn the wheel and hear a popping noise or a clicking ,and feel a slight binding feeling in the wheels you probably have bad cv joints, they will also vibrate when going strait in the road at a speed of more than 45 miles per hour you will feel a bad vibration in the front end of the car, those are the most common causes for them, you can also look at the boots on them, and if there busted ,and have slung a lot of grease out, they need replaced, good luck with it.

could also be well bearing or even a UJ... land rovers make funny noises that make you think its something, when its something completly different.

a mate had the same issue as you on his 300, we all thought it was a CV joint, for some reason he had to change the UJ on the front prop and the noise was gone

just a pity that disco cv joints are in the front axle so you cant see them till youve taken it all apart, they dont have rubber boots either

mine occasionally clicked on full lock then failed completely with no other warning signs.

Agree with Jp thought I had another bad uj joint but it turned out it was the wheel bearing. that crunched and knocked. so Try jacking up and put both hands on wheel give it a good twist top to bottom see if there's play in it. My guess is bearing. Like I say just a guess. Let us know please.

Hi JP,
Got home from work early today, so nipped under to have a quick look at the prop before stripping hub tomorrow.
Well pleased you said that about the UJ as the transfer to front prop UJ totally worn apart, ive took some photos as ive taken it off and stripped out both UJ's. (i dont need much of an excuse to get my hands dirty!)
its so bad i cant believe its not fallen off! or that its not been vibrating or anything
New parts arriving before 1pm tomorrow so should be back together tea time saturday!
i'll report back when its all back together...as you never know...i might be looking at the hub sunday!
Buster.....if your out there....Ta for the prop rebuild guide!

As ever thanks for all your comments Guys as it makes taking these things apart less daunting!

Also specified to my supplier not britpart ta........we dont use them he said.....GKN on the way
will post back amorra

fitted the 2 new UJ to the front prop today,
as the UJ at the transfer box was nackered as per photo's i had ordered up 8 new nuts and bolts. (tops of bolts worn away)
so cannot remove transfer box propshaft bolts?
so had to remove output flange (3 leg puller out)
tap off plate still stopping bolts from comming out
refitted everything, topped up transfer box (my drive has a slight slope, so out came some oil when flange removed)
also whilst i was under anyhow got my grease gun out and greased every nipple i could find lol
checked all bolts tight
Test Drive...... and Weyheyyy. no knocking well chuffed:crazy_driver:

Thanks to you all.... how much would that have cost at a LR Dealer?
Seriously guys ta!
