Thin flange, thick flange, integral... what's going on?

I was looking at KAM heavy duty rear halfshafts. They're splined at both ends, and come in different lengths for thin flange and thick flange applications. My 300tdi Discoveries have all had integral flanges on the ends of the half shafts; I've never seen them any other way. What am I missing?

300tdi is thin flange
 
Thankyou. Why does the KAM site show shafts splined at both ends, whereas my half shafts have integral drive flanges? Is it a Defender vs Discovery thing? Can I switch over to separate drive members and driveshafts?
 
Not sure about Disco's but my 300 Def 90 has integral rear, I believe the 110/130 are shaft/flange arrangement but the 90 can be retro fitted. Personally I would stick to integral as there is no issues with flange / half shaft spline wear. That said if you regularly snap shafts the flange/shaft arrangement may be cheaper to fix?

Does anyone know whether the drive bolt pattern is common between Defenders and Discoveries, i.e. whether a separate arrangement would be a direct swap for a Disco?

the same ,300 tdi defender and disco use the same hub and drive shafts,so interchanging is no issue
 
Halfshafts with separate end caps allow more hub movement without stressing the portion of the shaft where is splays out to form the flange.

When I was working on Scania trucks in the 1970's the LB140's and LB110's had separate caps and rarely broke a shaft, while the smaller LB80 was a regular casualty, and they changed over to the separate cap on all the axles.

Mind you, if a 110 or 140 shaft let go, it could do a lot of damage, especially at the inner end that ran through the diff lock.

all in one shafts work out much better on landrovers especially after hubs started using grease rather than oil to lube bearings, you commonly find 110 drive flanges and shaft splines worn due to lack of lubrication
