just got some bio diesel..

2x20 ltr cans full..

when i went to pour it in tank it wouldn't go through the funnels little wire gauze filter.. so i stopped puttin it in and its now in kitchen seeing if it thins when its a bit warmer.

so rang the supplier and he sez "manufacturer recommends mixing 50/50 with diesel as it contains anti freezing stuff..

i've been using this same stuff for a few months and when its been cold i've added 10% unleaded, but its never been as thick as it is today..

fair enough we got snow today, but its been colder in last month than it is today, an i aint had any problem...

to add further to this tale, when i went friday for some bio, they had emptied the storage tank to clean it.. which they did at the end of last week..

am i taking too much of a risk sticking this in my tank?

should i just mix it 50/50 with diesel as suggested or say 20% unleaded?

i'm gonna leave it to warm up for a few hours to see if it thins down before doin anything...

got any pics? last time i got a load like that it settled out to nearly 50% soapy ****e (ie 1/2 the bottle thick n cloudy with about a gallon of deisel on the top. id leave it to settle out for a couple of days if you can.

its in army jerry cans, so pics wouldnt do a lot of good m8.. lol..

it did look pretty cloudy/milky when it was in the funnel.. i had to shake the funney to get it through the filter...

sounds sus to me, id give one cana good shake up, then fill a pop bottle or jug or summat so you can see it.
was me last motor i had an issue with, ended up having to completly drain the tank, flush it through and new filter.

Put some in a jar and add the same amount of water. Then give it a shake up and let it settle for an hour. You'll soon see what you've got, as it should leave you with bio diesel on top and the water you added underneath with no layers in the middle. If that checks out OK, empty the jar and pour some more of your bio in, then leave it in the warm with the lid off for a few days. If you get water drop out, then the bio wasn't dried properly. If that checks out OK, the bio was probably made from palm oil or oil with a high fat content.

how much did that cost you?

thanks for that...

whats "water drop out"?

It's when any water, if any, in the bio settles at the bottom of the jar.

i see... thanks..

just poured some out in to a jar... picture below.. its thinned a lot and is clear...

my jerry cans were stored outside, maybe they were very cold when i put the bio in and dropped the temp so it went thick?..

the black dots r on the glass not floating in the fuel... lol..

would rather pay a extra 35p an get it directly out of a pump...... no?

it does come out of a pump, but if i put it in tank i have to pay 20% duty on top... lol... its my daily driver and i do between 300 and 400 miles a week.. so its saving me bout 15 to 20 quid a week...

50/50 derv is an option.. but i'd only be saving 7 to 10 quid a week, so might as well just use derv..

dont petrol have anti freezing stuff in or is it naturally anti-freezing?

10% petrol or bout a fivers worth?

or 20% would still only be a tenner..

That looks OK to me, but still put some water with it and give it a shake, then see what you've got once it's settled. The bio could well be perfect, but just waxing a bit in the cold weather. I'm still a noob at making my own bio but when the weather turned cold I started mixing it 75% - 25% with pump diesel and now it's really cold I'm running on 100% pump diesel until things warm up a bit.

well i put the a jar outside in a snow drift for a couple hours and its still fluid n no wax.. also cant see any water beneath the bio..

mixed with water in another jar and left to settle. just two layers bio on top, water beneath..

so ive stuck it in mi tank and added a fiver of unleaded..

see how it goes, think i'll stick to shop bought til it warms up a bit.. unless it burns this with no problems.. been for a drive, just to stir it in tank and no problem so far...

Please look into this before taking any action. I seem to recall reading you can add 1 tea spoon/ table spoon? of white sprit to act as a anti clogging agent. I could of course be very wrong so as I say look into it!!

Sounds good. Let us know how it goes.

probably palm oil mate, the stuff i use does exactly the same. But i pay 35p not 105p!

10% petrol usually sorts it out, or you can buy additives such as coldflow 402. Petrol has come out during tests as being the most effective solution though!

Better solution would be to save that stuff until it warms up and get some bio which is made from rape seed or something similar. Lower cloud point (point at which it starts to solidify)
