The Final Straw

If the vehicle is higher you won't need bigger HippoRamps. Normal size will do.

Still can't believe a clutch, wheel bearing and tyres would effectively "write off" a freelander.

I guess garage labour must be expensive.....I just never pay anyone to fix my cars,

yeah unfortunatley it came to that, i couldnt justify the prices with continued issues. everytime i had fixed something then something else would break without fail!
To be honest id put a lot of money into something that continued to cause problems.
the ins and outs are...
bought the 03 td4 GS hippo with 88000 on the clock for £3000 in december 13. (no service histroy.... i know but the wife was adamant and as she was paying then hey!)
spent lots of money on (did these all myself by the way)

full service, new brakes all round, new front brake pipes, brake wheel cylinder piston orings, handbrake on switch, brake master cylinder, fuel tank cradle repair, unseizied hand brake in the drum and cables, unsieze bonnet release cable, front wing repair and respray, stereo antenna (the most important according to the wife), 2 window regulator repairs front and back, new wipers and bulbs all round, rust removal - seal and paint, probably a few others i have forgotten or encountered on the way. god knows how much this lot would have cost at garage.
now we hit wheel bearing, new tyres and clutch. not sure on pricing for the wheel bearing but as we all know realistically if you change a couple of tyres, then you really need to change them all, with tyres being 195/80 r15 and the cheapest budget i could get being £60 a corner then its a minimum of £240.
then the biggy,,, the sodding clutch. due to the size weight and the minimal equpiment i have at home this would need to be done at a garage, the cheapest quote i got..... £1250!!!.

the book price on px when i sold it with 91000 miles on it the other day was £1500, so it made sense to sell.
Im just gutted that i have put so much time effort and money into it and it continued to be a right pain in the ar*e! but hey ho onward and upward!!!

All down to poor servicing, eh Nodge ;)?

Everything listed above with the exception of the rusty items is a service item any way. Even rust could be described as such by some!!
Window reg failure, while not a service item, is common on pretty much all cars, regardless of make.

But you had done everyfing...... And if you asked I am sure people have good part worn tyres and wheels available because they have upgraded their wheels ;)

Clutches can be done on the driveway with just a trolley jack a stout peice of wood or a length of 2 1/2" box section to straddle the wing tops a couple of straps and an extra pair of hands.

Personally I discount anything that has a service life. So although the brakes were in a poor state, that's down to bad maintenance. It's not the cars fault. All brake components should be inspected and any faulty or perished items replaced every 5 years.
Tyres are also a wearable item, as is the clutch. At least the Freelander clutch lasts 80 to 100K miles. The D3 is known to chew them up in 25K miles!! Hence I'd have the auto.

As I said someone would have part worns

ah well never mind its all done now. I just felt i was constantly throwing money at it. The wife wouldn't drive it any more and has stolen my Audi instead. Dont get me wrong it wasn't a bad car, it did what i needed it to do while i had it. But with more money needed to be spent and cramming a new Black Lab and child's bike in the boot with no space for anything else it was time to get something bigger. I would still recommend the FL as its a decent vehicle, but for a family with pets and lots of gear, maybe look at the FL2.

The disco has arrived! wish id have bought it a long time ago. Goes to show proof there is no such thing as a bad landy!. Poorly maintained and annoying ones yes but definatley not Bad. I get the funny feeling that's me totally hooked on landys now.

The only thing more addictive than Landys, is Landyzone! And you can bring the bits indoors to work on, have to go out in the cold to have a smoke!

have to go out in the cold to have a smoke!

I know ALL about it! Smoked for 40+ years, and lived in Minnesota for about ten. IF you don't know,......MN IS the second coldest populated spot on the planet (after some town is Siberia). -70F windchill factor, still air at -35F is a "norm" in January.

And since New Years 2014, I switched to vaping! No more smoking. It really works for me, and I never looked back. I can't even stand the smell of the cigarette any more (after six months of vaping). And I am vaping as I type this! I never smoked in the house, or any of the vehicles I owned over the years, but I can vape anywhere, and it smells good. On the long cross country trips, I would time my "smoke breaks" with fueling, and drove way too fast (sometimes), just to get to the next gas station, so I can have a cig.
BADLY addicted. Tried the gum, the patch, .....everything. This vaping thing works! I started vaping the "juice" with 24mg of nicotine, and now I'm down to 12mg. I recon, by the end of the year I'll be down to zero nicotine, and no "need" for it anymore.
