Hi I am new to the landyZone.

I have a Freelander TD4.

I was towing my 1500 Kg caravan up a long hill.
There was a bang from inside the engine or new catalytic convertor.
I lost power and great swathes of black smoke emerged from my exhaust.

The engine still runs OK and does not overheat. There is no water in the engine oil. Just lots of black smoke. I do not seem to be burning oil.

Any ideas?

check yer charged pipes from turbo to engine - via what ever route they take (intercooler maybe - i dont know the TD4)

sounds to me like you have blown one of the pipes on the pressure side of the turbo up/off. and your over fueling now as the maf is thinking the turbos chucking in charged air and its actually just pumping air into your engine bay.

quite common across a range of cars.
