Hi guys, my 90 defender has developed a really bad grinding/vibration after changing the rear pinion oil seal. I am hoping you guys can give me some ideas of what it could be before I take it to my garage. Here is what I know:

Grinding happens on overrun and is very bad going down hill. Uphill I can't hear/feel it until I let off the accelerator.
Coasting downhill in neutral, with transfer box in neutral too I can still hear it.
Also happens in any gear and reverse.
Braking when going at slow speed (less than 10mph) the noise stops.
UJs are fine. I took off the rear prop, drove in diff lock and the noise was vastly improved. Put the prop back on and the grinding/vibrating noise came back.
There was a tiny bit of play in the rear diff pinion bearing. Pre load was set at 95lbft.
Wheel bearings were good.

So thats everything I can think of at the moment and I would really appreciate your suggestions. Thanks.

preload isny 95lbft torque of flange nut maybe, pinion taper bearings just need a little preload so that they have no free play whats so ever, youve either got bearings over tight by loosing a shim from behind outer pinion bearing or not fitted spacer before flange
