About 2 hours spent searching and reading about roof tents I have FFS done a search, but no I am not doing a trans planet tour so not posting in Expeditions (Err, am I getting to worried about being told where to go):(:D:eek::eek::rolleyes:

Anyway! I want to camp with me 90. Want to do it on the roof (take as fact without all the reasons why not use the ground).

What happened to innovation? A grand for a roof tent? Five hundred? **** that. You can buy many types for a ton! Not bad ones either. So why has no one worked out you can just chuck a slab of 6x4 on a roof rack, chuck a cheep tent on top and lash it to the roof rack? I guess a ladder would help:rolleyes:. Is everyone looking for Hilton on wheels? Betcha I could knock up a decent nights sleep (accepting a roof rack) for less than £100. Am I lost here?

Comment and insults welcomed:D

Mate, i'm totally with you! I think its a complete con.

I am not totally sure why the roof is all important anyway? Not like we need to avoid wild animals in most of Europe!

I did mention this to the wife regarding a roof tent, she asked me why on earth would i want to stick a tent on the roof when the ground is perfectly fine, after mumbling to her regarding stray killer tabby's and lost sheep i could only come up with the answer...

'cause i can ;)

Needless to say we're using our standard tent on the ground next trip....

Im still not sold that the "roof" is a necessary pitch! Getting out for a wee in the night will be a pain. (although stand a spray springs to mind!!!)

a proper tent pitched on the roof will be far and away better than these over priced roof tents. They are for mugs who want to keep up with the landy fashionistas.Anything by northface or mountain hardware will be solid-cos ive got them tents!

Wild Country make some damn fine tents too, had mine for nearly 10 years and still in excellent condition ( tent pegs are terrible though, i'm looking for some titanium ones or i'll carry my sds drill and some frame fixings next time i visit wales)

MrJC - Now thats what I'm talking about. I've no roof rack yet, but thats the way to go.

Reasons for a roof tent rather than the ground, or inside:
Its a 90 so its short (yes, read threads about folding planks etc and have'nt dismissed that option just yet)
I want something for when I'm not able to pitch at a campsite or on soft ground, like in a pub car park, by the side of the road in the middle of London, outside the office:eek:, traffic jam, in the que for a ferry, over sodding wet muddy ground, whilst stuck on a green lane with no mates:doh: and , most importantly, as PaulWilde aptly puts it, cause I can:D

Camped in a dry river bed in the middle of Africa once. Then it rained:doh:

Real men camp in dry riverbeds in rainy season....

Clever real men do in on the roof :D

It's all down to your budget, priorities. I'm not poor, and more than a bit sadistic, so I get a kick out of setting up my roofftent in seconds, then sitting in my super comfy chair bbqing a steak, while my buddies are still trying to find their tent poles/a dry spot to put their tent, but that's just me ;)

Hey Booger, that looks like a spectacularly dumb place to camp:) At least my river bed was more of a shallow overflow. Your's looks like it could turn in to the mother of flood channels:eek:

I have built a cheap-o roof tent about £25 slept in it a few times. Will be making another better version soon but need to fit me new axles first will post up some pics soon

Will be making a far superior version that folds out similar to the ones you buy with a porch tat drops down the back so I can leave the Landy door open cook and have a shower in there if need be when I get around to it.
