Right, onto the next possible issue. The temperature gauge sits around 1/4 when running, but won’t go much higher. Is it supposed to be that low?

I did find another post on this but the answers varied and the thread became somewhat of a royal rumble.

My 2004 FL1 TD4 sits just under half way on the scale if under 50mph then on half if over 50mph for any distance

No. The thermostat is stuck open. Very common, and often fixed by fitting an in line thermostat in the top hose.

ah right, do you know where I could get one from, and are they easy to plumb in?

If you search for top hose mod or thermostat mod or summat like that, there's loads of references to it.

Basically a Renault 5 thermostat gets inserted into a coolant hose.

Dunno if this has the actual procedure, but a link found...

As above the thermostat on the TD4 & R40 M47 engines fail open, ie they start opening to early, thus the engine never gets up to temp, you can either replace the original stat, which is a nightmare 3 hours work minimum, or add a gates stat in the top hose, this is only possible on the diesel engine.
