temp gauge

ok p38 40ltr 1999 auto temp gauge suddenly goes to hot [red light] then 10 secs later down to middle[where it always goes]when red light on heater blows warm when middle heater hot this is driving on a straight road ,and is intermittant ideas please oh the temp gauge has always gone to middle after about 100yds.

with car running wiggle batery earths, get someone to look at guage!

it could be many things but the usual suspects are stat and pump.

the stat is around 20 quid and pump around 30 quid.

just been out and car over heated looks like themostat,s not working as top hose was solid ho well ive got nothing else to do in the rain

is there any water spewing out, try not to let it overheat anymore!

fitted new thermo but same prob is there another stat on these cars as my local motor factor sells one thats just a stat and rubber seal

theres only one, the one in the link above. there is however stories of stats in the housing at the front of the manifold. if someone has put on in previously then it could be that, take the hose off and poke a finger in there make sure its clear!

ok been out this morning temp gauge right over then back to normal me thinks its the temp gauge so what to check,earths ok

did the car actually overheat? if it did the temp guage is irrelevant, check you have a flow at the small pipe at the top of the rad

thanx gav its not blown its top yet but went i went out yesterday it went over to red for 10 secs then started to come back to normal

when temp gauge is in red,is car actually overheating?ie bubbling away in header tank,is heater working and do you have air con on or off at time?

think ive sorted it while looking at other things i noticed that the plate at bottom of plenum chamber was leaking when up to temp so tightened the three 5.5mm bolts and it seems to be ok now fingers crossed:clap2::clap2::clap2::clap2:

is that the fuel warmer plate?

yer thats the one

if it gives you lots of trouble/in emergency you can connect the two pipes together till you can re gasket it!
