Temerpature gauge goes straight to max

Thanks to everyone for the replies. I thought I would write back with what happened.

Well, after being away for a week and fitting a thermostat mod the temperature gauge it went back to normal! Great but not so great as it will happen again.

I did do some further research and from the document:

http://www.meeknet.co.uk/e31/M62B44_Engine.pdf

It describes that there are two active outputs from the temperature sensor on the water pump.

"A dual temperature sensor is used on the M62 (as on M52). It serves the purpose of registering the coolant temperature both for the engine management system as well as for the remote thermometer in the instrument cluster. For this purpose, two galvanically
isolated NTC pellets with different resistance characteristic curves are integrated in the sensor.

The dual temperature sensor is mounted on the end face of the engine in the water pump housing."

and

"The indicator characteristics of the coolant temperature gauge in the instrument cluster have been adapted to the higher temperature level of the engine due to the use of the characteristic map thermostat.

The pointer of the coolant temperature gauge in the instrument cluster is located in the mid-position at coolant temperatures of 75 oC - 113 oC"

Without wishing to start off another war, i have an issue that when i replaced my water pump today, everything seems fine apart from the temperature gauges pauses briefly at the correct temperature and then shoots off the end past maximum. when its cold, its the same, pauses at cold for a few seconds and then off the scale.

any ideas as couldn't see if this was resolved

i am going to try the all comms in a bit to see what that shows up.

cheers

Bring up the hidden menu and see what the system says...I had this hit the red but the hidden menu said -128C

This was solved once I rebled the system...it happened when my water pump went south causing an air lock!

Check all electrical connections to the temp sensor as it could be that!

cheers Ant, airlock could be a good call as the right hand pipe is hot from the pump and the left hand pump that goes to the bottom of the rad is coldish as if the thermostat hasnt opened
i do need to flush my system as my coolant looked too rusty and i wonder if my concentration was down as i used inugel ready mix but should have used concentrate as i couldnt drain the complete system down when we flushed it after the tranny fix. might be what killed my pump, but thats another story.
i'll call up the hidden ,menu and report back

well logged in to the hidden menu, it says -128 degrees?
i did the reset as well which didnt do much apart from the temp gauge going to zero and back to max, oh and resetting my clock...

the heater gets hot so the water is going somewhere and when i use the bleed screw on the header tank its hot water that comes out of there, ill plug in the all comms and see what that says and i have a short journey to go on tomorrow so will take it there and if its still the same i'll drain and refill

hmm, so where should i start look, i took off the two multiplugs from the pump and stat housing but didnt touch much else electrical that i know off but had quite a fight at times with different parts of the repair.
thanks for the reply

good news everyone, i plugged in my allcomms to see what faults i had and under the M62 engine module i had something like 'electronic thermostat fault' and 'electronic temperature sensor fault'.
i cleared them both and the temp gauge dropped to its normal position straight away and then on restart the faults are not shown.
hopefully that's the end of it.
i dont like to disconnect my battery as it says in rave as i have had immobiliser issues in the past but i wonder if thats what causes it as the two components that were showing as having a fault are the only two electrical connections i touched.

still hopefully sorted :D

god bless Storey and his allcomms, has saved my bacon a few times now, i had an issue with my laptop after changing to windows 7 so i emailed him yesterday at about 8 pm and i had answer within 10 minutes

That is a whole lot of legends but still slightly understated for the man.

i cant see how i could have kept my L322 without the allcomms, i do now have a faultmate extreme that i picked up cheap but my first instinct was to reach for the allcomms as its so easy to use

cheers all, and apologies for briefly hijacking this thread:eek:

Hi,

I changed a top gasket set on my L322 BMW V8 and the car actually started and ran!!

However......my temperature gauge went straight to max. I came across this thread

http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f10/l322-4-4-temp-gauge-over-read-help-126636.html

,which has the same problems, I've contacted the gent who posted, does anyone have any ideas?

1) If it is electrical, how do I test it / check it?
2) I changed the thermostat as a matter of course (90,000 miles)

Charlie

cant remember if you got this sorted Charlie, but if you want me to plug in my allcomms see if you have the same faults i will be down your way next weekend

That's very kind of you. I'm lucky enough to have the allcomms kit. All is okay with my RR, currently no faults in any section of allcomms, the issue just went away?!? - thanks v much for the offer. I understand yours is all okay too, great news as these things can start to play on your mind!

....rear lower tailgate has today decided to stop working - too much of coincidence with all the work I've been doing recently - I must have arsed something up!

Had same......can't for the life of me figure out why, Replaced relay still no go.

Checked switch - works fine!
Bridge Relay - Locks open
Checked wiring to BCU - all good....

It is just the BCU isn't authorising the locks to open....

Command is: Press Upper Tailgate switch - BCU opens upper tailgate and now monitors the bottom tailgate switch, once pressed it opens the lower tailgate....it won't open the lower tailgate if it thinks the top is still latched....

I have wired in a momentary switch across the relay to allow me to cycle the latch solenoids...works as a temp repair, but I can't for the life of me figure out why the BCU refuses to allow the lower tailgate to open...it knows the upper is open as the lights come on (as commanded by the BCU) so no clue!
