Teen with a Land Rover problem

Hi all.
I'm Archie, 18, I daily a 1968 Series IIA with a 200Tdi in it and 24 spline axles under it though he's still a leafer. Finally made myself a Landyzone account as I've started to get into my disco and the world of coil springs is new to me! so expect a few questions on this modern, alien concept...

I hear people like photo's so...









I shall start a thread for the disco rebuild at some point, expect the odd question and plenty of photo's as per, but it's not going to be happening very rapidly at all, running a farm, driving a series and doing an engineering degree take up a surprising amount of time...

This disco is a tatty engine donor I found in a shed and felt so sorry for that I bought it, stripped it, rejoiced at how solid the rear half of it was and am planning on rebuilding it. I have another 3 door 200tdi that was a freebie as it has no engine and horrendous rot, but straight panels and a spotless blue cloth interior, I've found another 3 door 200 on a neighbouring farm, with the worst shell I've ever seen, ruined panels and no interior, but low mileage and very good mechanicals. Should be able to make a tidy one out of the three eh!

Nice looking series, although I would get some smaller tyres on it, those must soak up a lot of the power, if any!

They're only 235/85s sir! They look wide on my landy as it has the 24 spline disco axles on it, track width is 7 inches wider than a stock series

I like that M.A.N truck.

Welcome aboard - always like a nice series, especially the IIA. I'm a bit tall for them, so we have D1's now, and nice to see a 3 door getting restored - they can be very rotten, but to me, they are the better vehicle - good luck with it

Only! Standard tyres on that were probably 6x16!

Does your MOT tester approve of the wheels sticking out of the arches like that?

The MAN's not ours, it's being stored. does make the series look small doesn't it!

I'm a big big fan of the 3 door 200 series discos, I think one would make a hell of a neat day to day vehicle.

True the standard size is 6.00's, but 99% of them run on 7.50's as they were standard fitment on lwb's so to my eyes the metric equivalent of the standard lwb tyre is a pretty standard size
The question about the MOT, I didn't realise until I did the axle conversion but the rear rims are larger offset than the fronts, which are swb rims. Also not helping the situation is the fact that I did the rear U bolts up one at a time, resulting in the rear axle sitting 1/2 an inch off to the passenger side. With the rear axle re-seated and swb rims on the back as well then all 4 tyres should be spot on. As it is the fronts are bob on level with the wings, rear right is the same and rear left is quite proud. All on the to do list!

May be equivalent in terms of diameter, nowhere near equivalent in width, weight, or handling characteristics!

You will learn in the fullness of time, I was a brat once too!

Very true, though I have about 2 dozen 7.50's in one of my sheds and it still amazes me the difference in height and width between them! I've experienced cross ply handling first hand with a set of Firestone SAT's on mine slidy fun in the rain haha

Very big differences in both size and weight within the same nominal size. I have a few sets of 7.50s as well, barely recognisable as the same.

Crossply are a different driving experience, but nice light steering, presumably cos they don't grip the road very much!

Yeah I'm glad to be on radials though. I was on 265/75's when I was still on series axles and they were a tad heavy... The ones on it are Fedima copies of insa turbos....... Which is not ideal as insa's are copies to start with
I'd like to be some BFG MK2 muds on limestone swb rims when funds exist, for now there are more important things, like servo assist to go with the discs

I have Fedima Maxima, not had any problems. They are a copy of an old military tyre.

Servo brakes are better!

One of those Discos is bound to have a working brake system, and since you're running a 200Tdi already it should all bolt right on. Cut out a set of coil mounts while you're at it

SWMBO has one, it is truly superb, good on fuel, comfy, quiet and cheap on parts/servicing.

you could always fit a remote servo - much easier - and fit one to the clutch too, whilst you're at it...I did this to SWMBO's D1 - there's a thread on here about it...... found it....
