techie questions?

I've got a S111 109 2.5 n/a with overdrive, and I went up to Scotland and back, about 960 miles, averaging 23mpg/55-65mph, all motorway driving, carrying about 300 kilos extra in weight (tools/spares/camping gear etc).

A couple of things; is 23mpg good?bad?normal? for that type of trip

and 2; I've heard you can get a straight-through exhaust, which will give you (apparently) more mpg/more speed? Has anyone had these done? Or have knowledge of these type of exhausts?

I can only deam of 23MPG
I get closer to 15MPG out of my 2.25 petrol.

i got 18mpg oot of me series 3 with a 3.3L engine and overdrive!
