Hi All,

I am just about to come back to the world of defenders after selling my disco. I had a td5 a few years back and my main reason for selling it was that I caught some pikeys in it trying to steal it. I decided to go for a disco as they seemed more secure but the disco just isn't cutting it for me and I dont want to let thieves ruin my fun.

I have found a 2007 TDCI that I am looking at this week and I am pretty sure I will buy it.

My question for you guys is which anti theft devices would you recomend and what are you using? Other than a shot gun!

Also do you know if the tdci's are just as easy to steal?

Would really apreciate any help.

It don't matter if its a tdci if they want it they will nick, it look in the stolen section some guy had his 62 plate xs stolen

Gonna give you a massive word of advice on the 2007 tdci as I have one!
Take it straight to a dealer and get the software update, it has to be genuine land rover software! I am saving you the 6 months of trauma I had with my 2007 model and it was only the 2007-2009's that have the massive power loss at speed It is solved completely by the software upgrade :)
For security I have a T pedal from shire fabrications, and I park another car behind :D

I haven't had any trouble with my '07 Puma... Was thinking about getting it tuned a little when I come into some money. Luck of the draw perhaps :p
 
The engine security is a bit better but the rest of the vehicle is just the same so get the security sorted.
The main problem with the early TDCI's is the tank breather is in the wheel arch and sh1t and water gets pulled into the tank and then the water get to the hp pump and youv'e got a prob, Latter versions have a redesigned breather. Plus yes there is a software upgrade but most of them would of been updated as a service action if they have been into a main dealer.
 
I had a thought the other day, on the old security section.

I was thinking about fitting a secret battery isolator switch, cant start with out battery and (with me anyway) you gotta take the seat out to jump it (as I understand)

So for me i'd have -

Battery isolator
Fuel cut off switch
Snap off steering wheel

The 3 together would make it pretty tough to nick. - Feel free to put me wrong! -

I've no trouble with her now, but it was trauma for the first 6 months changed egr valve maf turbo/intercooler hoses nearly changed the whole turbo. I spent months trawling both transit and landrover forums as its a very common fault, but no one ever posted final solution:eek:
There was another chap on here who was having same problem as me at The same time who also started a thread also solved by update of software plus new turbo.
So you were very lucky, ford have had lots of probs with that engine, on that year :eek:

The trouble with the first 2 of your suggestions is that whilst they may delay your Land Rover being pinched, they are not a visible deterrent, so they won't stop scroats screwdrivering the lock. Plus if you've isolated the battery have you also disabled the alarm.

As for snap off steering wheels, they are an excellent idea. Both a physical & visual deterrent. But once you've removed the steering wheel, what do you do with it? OK if you're parked at home you can take it in the house, but it's not the sort if thing to take to a football match; night out at the pictures; shopping at Tesco or for a meal in a restaurant. Leave it in the car and you might as well not have bothered.

I suggest you might be better thinking about further physical deterrents which are visible such as Disklok, pedal locks, window etching, all of which might deter the opportunistic thief.

Same, but I might also chuck in a x-eng pedal cover as well. They all add to the time spent thieving which as we know, they don't like hanging around!

Forgot that would turn the alarm off! Doh!

True about the snap off, but i dont mind carrying about.

Fuel cut off while not visibile would hopefully stop them nicking it or at least slow them down enough. Am looking into etching too, and a clutch claw.
 
I thought so. The action is very smooth and the lock just makes it so practical. Only issue is I need to find a nice slim boss to use it with as nrg dont do one for defenders. They are available on ebay and very reasonable in price.

Yes the distance between you and the wheel is reduced, which is no good for the likes of me. Also make sure you buy the genuine article and not a "lookalike" fake off ebay.
