hi all
i dived into a little deep water today and engine died slowly
now checked all the fuses in the engine bay which seemed to be ok but the one under dash, it is soaked, all the relays etc are full of water inside them.
couple of stuff in the car going nuts i.e drivers window wont shut, passenger window is going up and down etc
engine is cranking but not starting at all. it sounds quite healthy when cranks tbh but but a non-starter. aa guy connected some bosch reader which could not read anything so what could be the issue? ecu??
obv i will dry out the fuse box and check if there is any blown fuses relays etc
any suggestions are welcome as i may need the car for new years camping!!!!

water in the interior fusebox can make it a non starter as it's connected with a serial data link to the BCU which in conjunction with the engine ECU manages the starting sequence, also it gives the feeds for all the ECUs...disconnect the battery, unplug that fusebox dry it out well, after you plug it back and reconnect the battery leave the ignition on pos ll for 5 minutes then try to start te engine, maybe you are lucky and the IDM survived in it... check for water ingress at the BCU too(behind the glovebox)

Fried the ECU?
Also worth checking fuel intertia switch hasnt tripped/ set off. Press button in to check, It's on the N/S bulkhead near the back of ABS Modulator.

that one seems to be ok, checked it and pressed couple of times
if the ecu is blown, can i get any ecu?? assume it doesnt need to be coded or anything like that?
i really hope it is the fuse box inside the car which needs to be dried out etc. when i took one of the relays, it was full of water inside it so maybe drying up will save me...

as to any ecu, yes pretty much but best to use same version, pre and facelift ages, also same gearbox, but you can use the auto ecu in a manual but not the other way around.and yes it will need to be coded to the injectors and the bcu.

ok I took the disco to the garage 1st thing in the morning
the guy sprayed smth to the air intake and we managed to start the engine for a couple of seconds, then she died again. is that a good sign then? would engine start or NOT start at all if the ECU was fried?
also, I remember when fitting the snorkel, I have installed a tap to close the bottom hole so I can time to time unplug it to take the water out - if any. (pic attached)
I have unplugged it today and there was really very minimal water in there, not sure if that is a good sign as engine might have sucked all the water OR there is no water in the engine at all...not sure...

Well he prob spayed brake cleaner/easy start in and it fired but if electrics still wet it's not going to start due to fuel not getting to injectors etc
Short reply but hopefully you get what I mean

+1^^^ , with spray in the intake it will run on it even with the ECU unplugged as long as you can crank it cos that spray explodes under compression in the chambers so that's completely irrelevant, and not healthy for the engine so dont do that too often

ok thanks noted
just got a call fm the saying ecu is gone and need a new one
does anyone know how to re program the ecu that I can grab off of ebay??

you need dedicated tester to make it learn the immobiliser security code, set the injector codes and driver demand, the best would be to get one loaded with the proper map for your car too and off course to be compatible ECU, there are ECU repair shops in UK which will cost you the same and you'll not need any programming then... though as i said water damaged interior fusebox can make it non starter and faulty ECU shlould give fault codes on proper diagnostic machine... i'd say you better go for a second oppinion and rule out the fusebox first

I just called mike at dynachip to see if he can replace the ecu and do all the coding etc, he said he could but will check his schedule and let me know.
lets see what he says...

Put a fan heater in it over night, mine done the same and in the morning it was fine. I put it in the passenger footwell

entire fusebox has been cleaned up now but still no signal from the ecu so i am almost certain that ecu is not working
sent it to the local guys who fixes ecus etc lets see if they can do it OR more importantly how much they will charge me for it..........
