Hi all,

A few times recently my TD5 has refused to start, it doesn't even turn over, I wait for the glow plugs to extinguish, turn the key and.... nothing !

It has always eventually turned over and started after 5/6 attempts, recently however I had to call the AA as it completely refused to turn over, AA reckon its a dry connection on the wiring to the starter motor, they played with some wires and it started just fine, just wondering if anyone had any similar experiences and is it an easy(ish) job to replace the wiring and/or connector to the starter motor ?

Take it step by step.....2 men job....one turns the ignition the other listen to the starter relay if it clicks(R2 engine bay fusebox).....then u can go further...if it's a bad contact obviously it's within a connector somewhere or even at the starter solenoid itself.......u can try to give a direct +12v from the battery to the starter solenoid to check it(out of gear of course)

By the way dont u hear a louder click when u are trying to start?

starter solenoid is known issue-repair kit available- ebay etc

Thanks for the replies, I don't hear any noise at all if I turn the key and it fails to start, absolutely nothing.

Cheers.

It's most likely a dodgy connection on the fly lead to your starter motor. (The small spade connection). Pull the plug off and give the terminal a quick clean up with some emery cloth. Often just wiggling the wire will do the job. Mine plays up about once every 8 or 9 months. I give it a wiggle and then all is good for another 8 or 9 months.
