Disco 2 TD5: Replace exhaust mid-section - pros/cons

I'm sure this has been done on here and I have looked.
My exhaust is blowing from the mid section. I'm toying with replacing it with a 'straight-through' pipe.
What are the pros and cons? In particular mine has a long history of scraping through MOTs on emissions. Will a pipe make this worse?
If all the answers are in another thread that I've missed, please feel free to point me at it.

I have the straight through exhaust and i dont see other issue than a bit of extra noise but there is a slight improvement in throttle response... IMO that part has no involvment in emissions

No reason to have effect on emissions since its only a silencer on there, I believe if you're gonna replace something, improve it while you're there! I want a straight through on mine, have a decat atm so holding back on the spending and making lots of noise

Yep, I know that bit doesn't remove any emissions per se but wondered if changing the back pressure changed how it runs.
I don't mind a bit of extra noise and I certainly don't mind a bit of extra throttle response.

I am told by the local pub doom-monger that it will use more fuel and be a bugger to start.

Or if the extra noise is LOUD it's an MOT fail, if the tester is doing their job.

It's not that bad at all... i've heard noisier than mine with the muffler in situ but with engine cover removed

It's 2000 registered, '99 built so I assume it doesn't have a cat?

OK, just seems strange a '97 MY 300tdi was fitted with a cat , but a TD5 2000MY is not.

The CAT on Td5's was present only on Eu3 modells starting from 2002 MY

And you dont need gasket you just need plenty of exhaust cement to sandwich it all in when you bolt it up it squidges out everywhere, jobs a goodun!

I noticed vastly improved throttle response, and torque seemed to be better lower down as the turbo spools up faster. Once you get over dumping your foot on the loud pedal, it improves fuel economy, on mine by about 1-2 mpg!! which i found unbelievable really, but tested it over 4 or 5 tank fills and was defo true! Mines a defender 90 though, so was a bit loud for my delicate ears.

Im going to weld four half moons on mine, drill a load of holes in the center section, roll some sheet steel and weld to the half moons, then stuff it full of fiberglass in the cavity (making a muffler, rather than a restrictive silencer), this will at least take away some of the 'booming' noise and just leave me with a nice raspy note!

On a disco you have a longer exhaust so wont be a problem, go for it!!

I'm the other way around - had a straight thru pipe, hated the noise, put the original silencer back on and noticed no difference whatsoever Except it's a lot quieter LOL

Now I have a centre pipe for sale cheap (Dorset)

Lol I've got my old centre pipe back on too, I'm commuting too far for the noise to be enjoyable!!!
