hi all just bought myself a 2000 td5 gs went and viewed car guy said oil cooler cover had a crack so quick repair to get home put some sealer on it he filled up with water (a lot of water) and started struggling to start ran for a while but would keep stalling delay on throttle but picked up drove for 1/4 mile then stalled so jumped it and towed it we stopped to see if it would run of its own accord 15 miles later and upon revving the car there was steam coming from rocker cover breather and blew an inter cooler pipe that under half throttle throws a fountain of water out of the inter cooler pipe the turbo side air pipe was steaming coming from air filter and now won't start no water left in engine at all. Can someone try and enlighten me as to what's happened or happening as I'm stumped guy said he had a head pressure tested and it was fine and oil cooler was cracked but I can't understand as to what is or went wrong but now the dip stick is milky can anybody help please td5 is all new to me as its my first one

I would do but sold as seen haven't a leg to stand on so got to deal with problem but don't know where to start or even try and resolve

He was shady as told me it had 240 bhp from a £30 chip of eBay lots and lots of bull was being spoken I'm not put of as am a Landy owner 300tdi best truck I've ever owned already just want to rectify the problem and start using it had a lot of money spent on it previous full years mot just don't know anything about the td5 engine and hoping fellow td5 gurus can try and enlighten me as to where to start

OMG... sorry to hear that m8, imo try to cancel this purchase with full determination cos it looks very bad, if you can't it's definitely head off and test it yourself maybe you are lucky to be only the gasket but it seems worst

You can try and get your money back, but don't hold your breath I'm sorry to say.

If a dealer, you have more of a chance. Private sale.? Not a hope, although the lawyers will make money

I have a clown, owes me 6 grand for work done. Won't pay, solicitor told me it was a waste of money chasing him, imitimated it would be better referring him to the mob!

Worst case scenario for you?

Second hand engine

Good luck all the same

Sorry to hear about your woes. What sort of money are you into it for?
An engine from a LR breaker with a 6 months warranty will set you back about £650 plus fitting. Say about £8-900 all in.Then fingers crossed it doesnt go bang.
To start rebuilding yours may cost a lot more, but you wont know until you start pulling it apart.
Are you handy with tools? Do you have the time/space to do it?
Also if he sold it with a bad engine, and he sounds like he knew it, what else is wrong with it? Chassis? etc etc!
Hard choice but if it cost you less than £2K id put it on ebay as spares/repair and hope to get back £500.
Mark

I'm gonna take apart and investigate the situation pretty handy with tools just don't know the engine as its all electrically run hoping its just oil cooler given up and a head problem had new turbo and brake lines fitted chassis is brilliant all electrics work it was mot'd 10th August so has given up since then

If this is true I would be worried. That 'chip' has probably done a number on the engine!

Been removed and ecu put back to normal did that half way home thinking it was that that was messi g with the engine made no difference will be stripping down hopefully Thursday so will keep all party's informed just ordered a full head set metal dowels

Everyone please correct me if I'm wrong but if it is a 2000 plate the engine is a 10p engine which u cant just plug a chip into u need to send the ecu off for remapping (they take the chip out the ecu and put a new one in because the chip that's in them is not remapable) the new (15p) engines are the plug and play type?!? well so I have been lead to Believe and I'm going with heads cracked sorry

the chips sold on ebay are coming with a socket which is sodered instead of the old chip in the MSB ECU and the remapped chip is fitted into the socket... i've tried some chips like that which were made by tachosoft and they are loded with proffesiinal maps and work perfect but not 30 quid... though i have digital EGT, ECT gauges fitted to be on the safe side

Sounds like it wasnt a chip change in the ECU then. Was it just a small module external to the main ECU, plugged into the loom that went to the head?

+1^^^, and those so called "power boxes" are a real danger for the engine especially the cheap ones...i've tried one(expensive and good quality) on mine only for test reasons with a standard ECU and the EGTs peeked up to 900 not once under full guts... the car drove fine otherwise

Ye silver box with four cables in 2 black 2 white and was attached In between one white and yellow cable coming out the ecu it was removed on way home and white cable put back into ecu is metal with black rubbers either end cheap crap that's why it was removed
