TD5 Porous Head – Anyone had this (very) expensive fault?
Following on from my blown turbo post and diesel in the engine oil sub post on Monday (Defender forum) my mechanic has phoned me today to say he has identified the cause of my problem. I have a porous head around number 2 injector. Total cost for repair plus the new turbo will be around £2500...
I am going to go back to Land rover – the defender is an October 2005 model with 61,000 on the clock and a FSH plus intermediate oil changes. What would be really useful is any contact with other TD5 owners who have had the same problem – I understand LR may give goodwill payments but I want to present the strongest case I can to get something towards my £1200 Turner engineering replacement.
PM if you have been affected or know anything about this please and I’ll feedback on the response I get from Land rover

not had it on my vehicle (because its a tdi!!) but i've had a few customers who i've had to give the bad news to about their td5s, the fuel distribution rail inside the head cracks allowing diesel into the oil. not cheap to fix and if its left can lead to a multitude of other problems ie, knackered crank due to diluted oil, over speeding of engine leading to con rods exiting block due to raised oil level and turbo sucking up vapour.

got a secondhand head here, no problems with diesel mixing but needs pressure testing as engine had symptoms of head gasket failure.

Many thanks. No I have never had any overheating and the head was cracked around injector number 2. Seems to be a common problem with "pourous heads". I have spoken to Turner Engineering and they have confimed they have a steady sale of new AMC (strenghtened) heads. My Defender had done only 61,000 on a 2005 plate with FSH and intermediate oil changes, no overheating but on stripdown may have had "headshift" due to the plastic dowells... Head should be in by Tuesday and the new OEM turbo is going in as well - about £2800 so far. I have made a claim on my AA Waranteee which has paid me £500 and written to David Smith at LR to ask for a goodwill payment... no summer holiday for us this year - told the children and my wife we were going to bask in the glory of LR Engineering - not gone down too well....

thats hard luck my friend,i hope you do get some sort of goodwill payment from l/r,keep us informed as to how it goes.:(

Finally got my TD5 back - bill was just shy of £3000 and my original request for a goodwill payment from Landrover has been refused on my 3 1/2 year old Defender because I did not get the repair carried out by a franchised dealer. I have written back to the LR Executive Team and Customer Services - I'll let you know I get on...
