until some one looks state of bearings etc is unknown but i usually get a good secondhand unit and the bearings if they are good its a good indicator for the rest
 
That's what I would do before I even thought of a new pump!

Aye, as I already said, the engine needs pulling and fully inspecting - I know it's a pain but worth doing because the cost of new parts can then be weighed against the cost of a replacement engine (which as James said I'd also want to check the bearings on).
