hi, been searching threads for ages but cant find an answer to problem I ha d today with my 2004 defender 110 td5- tried to start it and nothing, normal lights came up on dash but nothing else, not even click from solenoid.tried wiggling wires to crankshaft position sensor, but again nothing. put car into gear and pushed it a touch and hey presto, it started.is it possible for the crankshaft to be in very slightly the wrong position for sensor to allow starting, or am I barking up the wrong tree. I have in the past had a misfire in wet weather and put this down to moisture getting into wiring of cps. anyone with any ideas?

starter motor sticking

Had this with a mates yesterday, crank position sensor was wet and muddy, wouldn't let it crank over as the stupid ecu controls everything, although his a a small click just the one thought when trying

thanks for your help, but I'm still confused- will a dirty/ defective cps stop the ecu from allowing the starter to engage?. I did consider the starter motor playing up, but it is quite new, then again I did have a slave cylinder failure a little while back- is it possible fluid from that has got to the starter and cause it to stick, but should I still hear a click from the solenoid.how easy/ difficult is it to change the cps-don't look easy, I can only just see it!

if you get diagnostics read it should tell you that the cps is faulty, but i still say starter, there again though it could be dodgy battery

My mates did ths after getting wet, waited a day fir it to dry and it cranked over, when it was dead there was a click from the starter but dint turn over, tried tapping it to still no joy, cps was wet and muddy, just put a code reader on it,

I might start with checking the Ignition relays . and see if they are engaging when you turn the key , and then work from the relay to the solinoid on the starter motor to see if you got 12v when you turn the key ,, Haynes has alot of Circuit Diagrams in the book so you should be able to trace the colour coded wires,
