Hi, guys

I have decided to get myself a TD5 to go on holiday in a couple of weeks as I have no chance of getting my 300tdi welded up in time but am struggling to find a good one.
I have been out to a couple which sounded good but one needed a new front hub and clutch and the other was drenched inside from leaking sunroofs and the floor was starting to rot.

I have spotted one locally but it has 204k miles on it. Is that to much for a TD5?

It’s cheap enough and an ES in what looks like pretty good condition but that mileage scares me.

I am in fife Scotland if anyone happens to have a TD5 they are selling anywhere near me (Edinburgh, Glasgow, Perth ok) it will be purely on road as a family car and it needs to have 7 seats.

Cheers

Depends on the service history I guess, I brought mine with 140000 miles on the clock and have had to replace alot of things that have failed due to wear, in the year and half I have owned it, new steering box, power steering pump, fuel pressure regulator, alternator and injector harness plus I got the air suspension removed

IMO the high mileage is not something to be scared by as long as it looks and runs fine... probably most of things have been already fixed on it...if the chassis is not rusty i dont see the mileage a problem...IMO a well entertained Td5 engine must go for 500K miles without major investments.... a friend of mine has a Td5 Defender from new with 375K miles and the engine was never "opened" ... but everytime the "luck factor" is very important too;)

I my personal opinion, when it comes to engine life-expectancy and health, oil quality and the frequency of oil changes is everything. Yes, there are other factors at play but if the oil is of crap quality and has been changed infrequently, then look out!

Only the service history can tell you that.

The TD5 is a modern engine. If looked after, you would expect a decent degree of long term reliability.

At least it didn't inherit swirl flaps during BMW's tenure! (thank Christ!)

There is always an element of chance but despite the mileage that looks in great nick! I would assume at that mileage stuff is bound to have been done. Get in contact with the seller, ask loads of questions and go with your gut. Good luck!
